Thread: Looking for AM3/AM2+

    Default Looking for AM3/AM2+

    Hi,

I have a Number Two: Opteron 180 on 939 NForce4 board with 3 GB DDR-400 (2*1GB+2*512MB). I just realized that I have 2*2GB of Mushkin DDR2-800, which were left over from when Number One got 4*4GB of DDR2-800 cheaply. Secondly, I did notice that there are Phenom II X4 out there, and still motherboards that both accept these new chips and DDR2. And eventually the Number One will move to DDR3 or whatever, releasing even more DDR2 for the Two.

But alas, there are too many motherboard models to choose from in the category. Its hard to see the good mid-priced bang for the buck among them. Any suggestions?

It depends are you going to use onboard graphics? You may want to check out this one.

Good point. There is a GF7600GT now, so even those integrated chips could probably beat it, but it will probably inherit some beefier card. And there that microATX design looks less than ideal; I've stumbled on "GFX brick all over the SATA connectors" before.

That UD3H looks much nicer, except for "not listed by any local store" -bit. :(

Do you need help finding a board? If so let me know where you live and I will see if I can find it for you. Do you ebay by chance? Just checking

Thanks for offer but I bet that I know the "local market", which is not english btw, sufficiently. There are so many, who will benefit from your valuable time much more.

So what do you mean? I can't help? I believe you are likely right, just thought I would try and help you if I could

    Yes that.

I ventured into Gigabyte's site and used the "Where to buy?" [Finland]
That turns out only the import company, and not any retailers.
But I can walk to a nearby retailer and squeeze the clerk gently ...

There seems to be prices for some 785G-based boards from other vendors,
like MSI 785GT-E63 and Asus M4A785-M. You might have an opinion whether
    they are any good?

    [Edit]
Cannot make heads or tails out of AMD technical docks, but it looks now that having four memory modules affects the speed that the integrated memory controller in CPU can handle them. I hope that is not true, for it sort of takes steam out of the plan.

Thought so, just wasn't sure what you meant or if I offended you :0

I really don't know what is best in regards to AMD either, your best bet would be to PM Artdrivers and see if he will come back here and advise you on this

    Don't worry. ;)

GA-MA770-UD3 (rev 2.0) would be cheap too, and apparently has features that I do look for. Integrated gfx is definitely not a must. But perhaps there is a catch?

I'm in no hurry. After all, it is only a "Number Two".

You may want to steer clear of boards with onboard GFX, if possible to find without and still meet your wishes
