    Default EP45-DS4 instability at stock speed

    My PC has intermittent severe stability problems which I am not able to pinpoint. The comp runs Win2003 x64 SP2 server at stock speeds. Not overclocked. Over the last couple of months I had several episodes of instabilities/BSODs with it.
    The PC can run w/o issues for days and weeks under load but when the problems struck it is a real pain.

    Symptoms:
    ========
    - PC will eventually BSOD. Often approx. 60 seconds after a power on from Stand By mode. Happens maybe 1 out of 10 times. All sorts of different stop messages (0x0a, 0x07, 0x3b, ...) are generated.
    - After a BSOD the PC is unstable even during Bios post. It hangs trying to access the bios or inside the bios setup itself or while identifying the RAID controller or while booting the OS etc. Sometimes the bios setup screens are garbled and options a only partly written to screen or options are only partly visible eg. [disab] instead of [disabled]
    - After several reboot attempts the PC will eventually boot again. Clearing the CMOS and switching to save defaults is usually involved but no specific action guarantees success.
    - Once the PC boots again it is ok to restore the optimized bios settings
    - The PC might now run for days until all happens again

    Unsuccessfully tried remedies:
    ======================
    - replaced motherboard
    - replaced PSU
    - removed 4GB RAM of the total 8GB
    - swapped SSD non-raid to Raid

    Hardware:
    =======
    Motherboard GA EP45-DS4 latest F8 bios
    8 GB RAM (2x2GB G.Skill F2-8500 1066, 2x2GB G.Skill F2-8800 1100) run at 1066
    Air cooling (CPU temp 40C, GPU 55C, Board 40C)
    On board ICH10R with 4x500 GB Sata in RAID 10
    Nvidia FX570M powering 2 LCD
    Nvidia NV290 powering 2 LCD
    USB keyboard/mouse Thinkpad Touchpad

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Try loading optimized defaults, save reboot then set Performance Enhance standard and try MCH Core 1.2-1.24v for 4GB configuration, 8GB may need some more.
    Check ram voltage in PC Health Status, set it manually if it is not set according to the specs.

    Mixing different memory may be a problem as well as an 8GB configuration. Start win 4GB.

    Please fill your forum signature with the system spec, including CPU and a link to memory specs on G.Skill site if possible.

    EDIT: try MCH Core 1.05-0.95v if more doesn't help.
    According to GB site F9 is the latest final BIOS, and there is a beta F10b also.

    I will try the bios settings. Currently I have only 4GB installed to test.

    My bad regarding the bios version. I have the GA-EP45-DS4P (not GA-EP45-DS4 as stated) board. Gigabyte has the latest non-beta version down as F8: GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - BIOS - GA-EP45-DS4P (rev. 1.0)

    I found one F2-8800 memory on G.Skill site which is a low voltage memory, but there are about 3 kits of 4GB F2-8500, 2 need higher voltage.

    I recently battled something like this and after almost giving up I managed to get 100% stable by upping my MCH from 1.2-1.24 to 1.3 and it did the trick.

    -something to try anyway

    OK, got some news.

    My current motherboard is the GA-EP45-DS4 (previous one was w/ the DS4P) and is now updated to the F9 bios.

    1. Test
    =====
    4GB RAM installed.

    EPP-1066 CL5-5-5-15 2.1v
    Bios manually set to 1066, Dimm 2.1v, MCH 1.24v, 5-5-5-15

    RESULT: BSOD on 1. round w/ IntelBurnTest. Run time 10s. Checked twice.

    2. Test

    4GB RAM installed.

    Bios manually set to 1111, Dimm 1.86v, MCH auto, 5-5-5-15

    RESULT: NO ERRORS in 50 rounds w/ IntelBurnTest. Run time 30m.

    Now some questions,
    1. does this confirm a faulty RAM set or did I do some mistakes in setup?
    2. would be ok to put a second 1100 set in this PC?

    Hard to tell, could be faulty ram, settings or incompatibility issue.
    If ram has EPP, try with optimized defaults and Performance Enhance set to standard, then MCH Core in the range 0.95-1.24v.
    Try less DRAM Voltage 2.08/2.06v.
    Run memtest86+ before starting windows see if you get any errors there.
    No need for 50 runs of IBT, 10 runs with max memory should be enough.

    Did you try to run them with default settings?
    Try them in slots 2 & 4 too.

    Use Prime95/Orthos blend torture for 8+ hours to confirm stability. Sometimes Prime95 will fail quite quickly where IBT will pass.

    There are other factors for memory performance, tRD(Static tRead Valu in BIOS, Performance Level in MemSet) has a significant impact on bandwidth and latency, lower values are better.

    Get a hold on a memory benchmark software to compare performance of various settings. I use MaxxMEM² - PreView myself, Everest has one, and there are others.

    A screen capture of MemSet main(click >>) and SPD(click spd) windows may be helpful.

    Details for the working 4GB F2-8800 config. Bumped processor speed a bit to 3.2GHz now to get to 400MHz FSB. Everest reports temp 18C over ambient.

    CPU Vcore/Termination/PLL and MCH Core may overvolt if left auto when OCing, please post a screen capture of EasyTune -> Tuner -> Advanced -> Voltage tab.

    These modules need higher oltage than the F2-8800, more compatible with the f2-8500cl5d-4gbpi-b, do they work by their own?
