    Default Overclocking Help Q8400 and EP45T-UD3P

    Hi guys, I am new to the forum and to overclocking also. This motherboard has so many tweak options on it I don't know where to start. As you can see from below I have C.I.A. 2 turned on and running the Racing profile, which from where I ran prime95 for an hour the other night and everything was stable. Temps never got above 165F (ambient room temp about 70F), CPU was running at 3.07GHz, bus was 384 and FSB was 1536. The memory was running at 768.4MHz and no problems whatsoever.

    But then I switch from Racing mode to Turbo and the computer will boot fine, but then locks up on the windows logo screen, I have a feeling that it may be my memory frequency running too high but not sure how to resolve the issue. I have also tried disabling cia2 and manually setting the host clock control and it keeps increasing the memory speed also, and at the same time cpuz shows the timings change when the bus speed is increased and I think this is because of the auto timing setup.

    I'm not looking to get the fastest possible out of it, I want it to run stable but faster than stock. I also noticed that when I disabled CIA2 and CPU EIST function my multiplier kept changing in cpuz like the stepping was still activated as it would not hold a constant frequency (at idle), any ideas? I have included the current bios settings I have below for your information. Please let me know what you guys would recommend for overclocking this beast or atleast a starting point and whatever other information you need, I would greatly appreciate it, thanks!

    P.S. I also have not used optimized defaults in the bios either and I am using a stock heatsink, a possible upgrade in the future, fyi

    What temps were those 165F, CPU or core temps? Quite high for Prime95 at 3GHz. Can probably be lowered when OCed manually.

    Start by reading this post.
    Best thing is to stress the system before OCing with default voltages as described in that post, to make sure what is stable ram settings/voltages.

    Thank Chike for the response, I believe it may be core but not for sure. The program I was using is Real Temp 3.40, and it lists individual temps for all 4 cores, so that's why I'm thinking core temps. 165F is really quite high?, I would have thought that was about normal on a stress test at 3GHz but as I have said I have not done much OC. Any suggestions on better cooling?, I was looking at an Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro from newegg, it seems to have many positive results. I will check out the link you posted and get back with you, again thanks.

    Im using the exact same settings for my Q8400 except its x8 multiplier and 3.92 Ghz. ViD is different also but the cpu/machine is running cooler,could be the general cleanup.
    core idle temps 37C max load(occt and prime 95) 54-57C.

    I dont have ddr3 memory but cpu will run 4ghz with 1.39375 v in bios

    Yes, pretty high for Prime95 at 3GHz and 70F ambiant temperature, even with stock cooler.

    Make sure the cooler is seated properly. Every time it is removed the base and CPU IHS must be cleaned and thermal compound re-applied.
    Could be too much/little thermal compound or the thermal compound itself.

    May be the air flow inside the case. Test with open case and room fan blowing over it, if temps drop significantly than this should be addressed.

    Hey Chike, I'm sure the heatsink is mounted properly and the thermal compound is whatever came with the stock cooler and was already applied to the cooler, I have never removed it. I really dought its airflow, I have an Antec 900 with 4-120mm fans and one 200mm on top, most of the time the exhaust case temp is 3-5 degrees F more than ambient, so I'm sure this is plenty of air flow. I am keeping the Artic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro in mind, seems to have many happy customers

    Could be thermal compound.
    Prolimatech Megahalems and 12 Other Coolers for Intel Core i7 Overclocking (page 18) - X-bit labs
    The Cooler Master V8 looks rather compact and not expensive.
    Not sure the Arctic Freezer 7 pro is suitable for quad OC.
    Whatever you decide to buy take measurements and make sure it has no problem fitting in the case or block the ram slots.

    T board and 45 chipset and ddr3 well its going to become a bit of an oddity(mho).

    I would say get your memory working as fast as it will go,while keeping the cpu at stock speed just so you know what its limitations are.
    That will probably take hours of experimentation.

    Since you are on the same memory control hub/mch as the rest of us your bandwidth is going to be limited anyway compared to the i5/i7 cpus with the mch on chip.

    Leaving the memory aside the cpu will do 3.9 ghz within core volt recommended limits on the ud3 board and 4Ghz+ outside those without going extreme.

    Most good aftermarket coolers seem to provide a 10 degree cpu temperature reduction over the intel standard one at big overclocks, but if you arent getting a 35% + overclock over the standard cpu speed ,putting money into one may not do anything.

    Once you know how far you can push the memory ,understress it and start to stress the cpu a bit (mho).

    380 x 8 with cpu core locked at 1.2875V in bios is automatically strangling your chip.

    My Q8400 chip is 2 days old. 1.2875V is its VID. Thats the maximum voltage it should need to operate at standard speed,ie what the motherboard will apply on auto at 333mhz x 8.
    Since you are running at 380 mhz cpu host frequency at x8 speed and dont have load line calibration enabled you are potentially throttling the cpu.

    My q8200 has a VID of 1.225V so if I was using 1.2875V bios at 380x 7 it wouldnt make me worry .If it was my Q8400 I would think " I cant really test things because my Im holding my cpu core too low".

    That isnt to say my cpu would not work at such a low overclock with like 1.19V in bios,it might but intel tells me I could need 1.2875V on my particular Q8400 chip to be 100% sure it works at 333x8(2.66Ghz), who am I to argue
