    Default GA-EX58-UD3R + RAM issue

Hi, long time reader, first time poster. I searched for this question on your forum and could not find an answer.

I have the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R motherboard, Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield, and OCZ Reaper HPC 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1866 (PC3 15000) Triple Channel. The mobo is 1.0 and I have the most recent BIOS on it (F8I). I have nothing overclocked.

When I updated my motherboard with this BIOS (I updated so I could run virtualized OS's), everything was reverted to the optimized default. The RAM was at 1066mhz , 7-7-7-2? timings as opposed to 1866mhz, 8-8-8-28 timings that the memory is supposed to be.

Now I set my RAM to 8-8-8-28 timings and the max speed I can set it to is 1600mhz - if I go higher the system will not boot.

Anyone have any idea why this would be? Or is there any other info I can post to aid in determining what is going on?

Also I read this post < http://forums.tweaktown.com/295784-post5.html > and it had settings about what to set in the BIOS for EX4x motherboards -- can this same thing be used with my mobo (EX58) and/or is there a post like that for EX5x motherboards?

    Thanks!

why are you setting it at 7-7-7-28 when it should be 8-8-8-28? it will be fine at lower ram speeds but at higher @7-7-7-28 it will fail, set it to the spec 8-8-8-28-1T and ram voltage to 1.66,to use the full 1866mhz you will need to overclock the cpu like i have to use 1800mhz i had to overclock to 3.8ghz you will need to clock slightly higher, dont go higher than 3.2ghz with stock intel cooler though

I mis-spoke before. I meant to say that the BIOS is trying to set it at 7-7-7-2? and I manually set it to 8-8-8-28 from the beginning! (I edited it above)

Ok. So I had the BCLK at 133 and the memory multiplier at 12x originally - thus the memory was at 1600mhz. This did boot.

I increased the DRAM voltage from 1.500 to 1.660. I increased the memory multipier to 14x. System did not boot (just beeped quickly for about 10 sec then turned off).

I then, leaving the DRAM voltage at 1.660, put the memory multiplier back to 12x and increased the BCLK to 150mhz. The system booted normally.

    A few more questions.
    1) Why was the DRAM Voltage for 1.660 and above in purlpe text as opposed to blue text? Is this the best voltage for my RAM? Where or how did you determine that? ( I want to learn)

    2) Why can't I increase the memory multiplier over 12x?

Sidenote - My CPU heatsink and fan is the Thermaltake V1 AX CPU Cooler CL-P0508. I am aware of it shortcomings! I have a Thermalright CoGage True Spirit, Thermalright LGA1366 Bolt-Thru kit, Yate Loon 120mm x 25mm fan, Tuniq TX-3 Thermal Grease, and heatsink lapping kit coming tomorrow!

your rams rated at 1.65 volts, and in the bios if you set it to 1.66 it will actually set it to 1.64 in the bios,is your chip a c0 or a d0? and what clock do you want to clock to? 3,2ghz or higher? ill give you some settings to use

How do I tell which CPU I have c0 or d0? I bought in on Jan 14 2009 so I am guessing it is c0 as it looks like that d0 was not released until May 13, 2009.

Yes, I would like to get over 3.2ghz. I would like to hit 4.0ghz just to boot and run for a few minutes. After that, for my day to day, I would like to be in the range of 3.5-3.75. Thanks!

do you have easytune? it will say on that under cpu/revision...its no big deal just that c0 will need abit more cpu and qpi voltage than a d0 chip unless you have good c0 chip also what cpu cooler you have?

just set your bclk to what clock you want 3.2-3.8ghz ect and set ram multi to match your ram speed, set timings manually set ram voltage to 1.66/cpu voltage on normal setting for now and qpi on 1.3000 that should be good for any clock from 3ghz upto 3.8ghz qpi link speed is 36x and uncore will be twice the number your ram multi is

it depends on what overclock you want it might need less but i use 1.30000 for 3.8ghz 1.30000 volts wont hurt anything you can always lower later and test with prime95
