    Default Gigabyte EP45-DS4P Stability Problems..

Hi All, wow - what a useful forum! (and busy too!)

I'm having a few issues and struggling to determine the root cause, hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction.

    SHORT VERSION:
After recent issues (see long version), I recently re-plugged in my DVD Writer to the rig and on reboot, the system would just shutdown (ACPI light on mobo goes red, all fans off etc.), this would happen sometimes during POST, sometimes during other start checks and sometimes during the boot of WinXP - i.e. not always in the same place. I started the process of unplugging things back to basics until it started to work again, then started plugging them back in. All up, I ended up with it all plugged back in (inc. the DVD writer) and it seems ok - but obviously in a fragile state.

Having already replaced the CPU, I wondered if the PSU isn't up to it or there's an issue with the MB (BIOS ver F8).

    Suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,

    Anthony..

    LONGER VERSION:
After almost of a year of stable running, I used the Gigabyte EasyTune utility to put the mobo in to "Full Thrust" mode. It hung totally almost instantly then refused to reboot in to Windows. I managed to get back in to the BIOS and turn off the MIB, but it then refused to post at all - it would power up, then down again within a second or so. Nothing I did (i.e. unplugging components) seemed to get it to recover. With limited "spares" to interchange, I resorted to Google. I wasn't sure what was at fault here - mobo, CPU or PSU. I borrowed a CPU from a PC at work and it booted ok, reset BIOS to fail safe defaults, tried my CPU back in it - nothing. Bought a new CPU - initially booted in to the BIOS, set fail-safe defaults again. Rebooted, SAME problem again - shut after 1 second or so! Put the CPU from work back in, boots up. GRRRR. In the end, I did get it running but it's been fragile ever since.

    G/Card:

try resetting "clearing" the cmos you could remove the motherboard cmos battery and leave out overnight or short the two motherboard pins near the battery load optimised defaults after youve cleared cmos, dont use easytune to overclock it will 9 times out of ten crash your pc,always do overclocking in the bios, easytune crashes my pc if i try to use it to overclock its just a monitoring program really, thats all its good for

Thanks - that's one of the things I tried initially without success. Certainly won't be touching easy tune again!!

Currently, the board is up and running, but my key point is, it seems very fragile - I hardly dare plug anything else in or put the BIOS settings back to "Optimized Defaults". Such as when I plugged the DVD writer back in and it started shutting down on me again!

I had wondered if it was underpowered??

i dont think its psu,did you try re installing the chipset drivers?they control all your sata and usb ports, having said that ive known a few other users have problems with zalman psu's and a 450w psu aint gonna cost that much even a cheap brand

...surely the "drivers" only affect it when it's in Windows itself and I don't see any firmware updates for it.

Perhaps if it stays stable for a while, I'll revisit the BIOS settings. I don't think the BIOS has ever reported the correct CPU speed though.

I've used Gigabyte motherboards for about 12 years now and this experience is denting my perception :-( (until I find out why it's happening)

its worth a try as it cant harm anything and the crash may have corrupted them, also are you stable enough to re flash the bios? that might help also...flash using q-flash

...all the drivers appear to be up to date, and there's a BETA BIOS available.

I think it's probably stable enough to do it, but is going to a BETA really the way to go?
