    Mr Starkington,

This is gonna sound totally wierd. But I have the exact same problem on a different board.

Every so often my EX58-UD3R system "loses" a channel of ram. when this happens the bios shows the total RAM as 4GB (I have 3 x 2GB) instead of 6GB. Going into bios timings shows the missing channels has all dashes where the SPD timing info usually is.

When this happens, windows (7 Pro x64) BSODs usually very quickly with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL or PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA. This bizzare thing is that windows reports the correct amount of RAM even though the BIOS did not. The problem seems to go away temporarily after some fiddling around.

I even went as far as to open a support case with Gigabyte technical support, unfortunately I did not twig the thing about the trigger being the power down for > 2 hours. Gigabyte linked me to a beta bios and suggested I try that (no effect, nor has subsequent bios updates). Gigabyte noted I had not purchased RAM on the certified compatability list. I felt I had no more info to provide them or proof of a software/board defect so I didnt chase it up.

This is not caused by defective RAM or CPU problem. I cannot explain it. I wish gigabyte had helped me more, but I had very little info for them to go on except the BSODs, when I opened the case I hadn't even noticed the BSODs coincided with the RAM detection screwing up. Wish gigabyte would help us.

I removed the CPU to check for bent pins / poor contact. I couldn't find any bent pins in the socket, but some of the pads on the CPu didn't look to be getting proper contact. I have replaced the CPU with some improvement.

Cold boot: The BIOS will identify 4GB RAM at POST. When I boot into windows on a cold boot (It now makes it to windows instead of blue screening before windows loads) and go to resource monitor I get 2051MB RAM hardware reserved. I have only had the computer up for about 5 mins so I don't know about stability yet.

Reboot (Shut down and restart the computer about 10 secs later): The BIOS will identify 6GB RAM at POST. Windows loads with 3MB RAM hardware reserved in resource monitor. I haven't had the computer up long enough to test stability.

Does anyone know why the RAM would not map correctly on cold boots but does on restarts?

Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance.

I recommend you open a support case with Gigabyte on their website's "Technical Service Zone". I have this problem on EX58-UD3R with triple channel kit Crucial BL3KIT25664BN1608.000.

I tried reseating the RAM and changing the order of the modules. next time i cold boot i'll check if it helped. Btw, I don't know if you noticed but the BSODs are more frequent when the ram is run in XMP mode.

Starkington, in case it helps you (Probably not) I reproduce the content of my technical support case with gigabyte. As i mentioned before, when I opened this i didnt really understand what was triggering the bsods and hadnt realised the whole 2gb disappearing thing.:

    Me:
    Hi,

I was wondering if you could do anything to improve the board's support for the RAM I am using with a bios update.

I have 3 sticks of Crucial 2GB DDR3 Ballistix PC3-12800 CL8, 1.65v arranged in triple channel configuration. In default BIOS settings the machine bluescreens when running prime95 and intermittently wont post and then shows a message says that I was overclocking too hard.

By relaxing timings to RAM's SPD rated specs I got this RAM running reliably at non XMP speeds. But I was unable to get it running in XMP speed despite the RAM advertising support for XMP mode.

I am using a Crucial triple channel kit Kit No. BL3KIT25664BN1608.000

If you could improve support for this RAM through a BIOS update I would be very happy?

    Gigabyte:

    Hi,

Sorry but we do not have the same memory to do the test. We used Kingston XMP memory and enable XMP profile 1.

And there is no problem at all with F7a bios. We have attached latest one f7c for you.

    Regards,

did you guys test each stick on at a time in one white ram slot one at a time?if your ram modules and slots are good then it will boot up from any white slot with just one stick in try that first

    Hi wazza300,

Thanks for your suggestion. I never tried testing the sticks 1 at a time, because I never accepted that the RAM was faulty. As my pc stands now, i can run prime95, memtest or windows memory diagnostic for hours and hours and hours and no errors show (believe me i tried ). If the ram was faulty an error would show. It is only when you see the bios detect 4GB instead of 6GB that you know stability has completely gone out the window.

I think this is a bios bug for sure.

i would still test it the way i said just to be 100% sure,it can also be a faulty ram slot

    Hello guys,

Let me join your Cold Boot Issue Club: I experience exactly the same problem. I know, this thread deals with Gigabyte, but the problem described here extends to other brands, too.

    My specs are:
    I have i7 920 D0
    ASUS P6TD Deluxe
    Corsair 3x2 Gb XMS3 TR3X6G1600C7
    PSU Floston Energetix 1000W
    2x8800GTX
    Scythe Mugen II

    My issue is as follows:
After "cold" boot (when the PC is shut down for night time, say, for 6-7 hours) Windows 7 64bit and BIOS would report 4Gb instead of 6Gb. If I shut the PC down after "cold" boot (not reboot, but shut it down) and then turn it on, Windows and BIOS would report 6Gb again. I tried to shut down the PC for 1,5 hours - Windows still reported 6Gb after turning it on back. But after 6 or 7 hours of being shut down I get 4Gb. Of course, I will post the BIOS settings, but for now you can see the main weirdness: "cold" boot is the factor.

Note: Another RAM (from QVL for my MoBo) runs flawlessly.

Messing with voltages resulted once or twice in cold boot detection of all 6Gb, but eventually I got either MEMORY_MANAGEMENT BSOD or unexpected reboot with 4Gb detected after another reboot.

I ran memtest from bootable CD, one stick at a time, no errors (1 pass however, no more).

Windows can load with each of the RAM sticks inserted in slots #1 or #3 or #5 (the slots for triple channel config on my MoBo).

The only idea is that this is the case of some crazy incompatibility, as long as another RAM brand works fine.

    Any fresh ideas?

if it boots with one stick in any white slot i wouldnt worry about it,if windows sees 6gb and its using it all id put it down to a bios issue

No. Both BIOS and OS see 4Gb. Task manager shows 4Gb and simple calculation shows that the system indeed uses only 4Gb.

thats not right then, what bios are you using and clocks? stock clocks? voltages for cpu/qpi/ram???
