    Default GA-MA790FX-DQ6 and AM3 cpu

    Hello everyone,
I have the GA-MA790FX-DQ6 mobo paired with a phenon 9850.I was thinking to upgrade the cpu to a AMD Phenom II X4 965,but first i need to know if my mainboard and the 965 are compatable.I am running the f5 bios right now, will i have to flash to the f7d bios to make the 965 work?
    Thanks in advance.

The answer is yes you need to update to the F7D Bios for Phenom II X4 965. Look on the supported cpu's for the GA-MA790FX-DQ6 motherboard. Scroll down on the page provided below, and then scroll down to the AM3 section look at Phenom II X4 965 It's over to the right, and lists the minimum bios supported for the cpu. http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/M...ProductID=2690

you may want to decide getting an entirely new mobo as well. I have the dq6 as well and I've had nothing but problems from my new 965.

I've updated BIOS I even downgraded it back to F2 and tried each individual update, F3 F5 F6 F7d, and nothing did anything to help.

My problem is that my cpu on all cores is only clocked at 800mhz... now before you say it, I seriously doubt it is Cooln Quiet. two reason.

    1) It IS disabled. yet I'm still clocked at 800mhz
    2) Even if Cool n Quiet WAS enabled, you would not be doing 100% load on all cores, and still be clocked at 800mhz... it just wouldn't happen. or rather it shouldn't. ran prime 95 for 10mins and still AOD was showing I was clocking each core 100% at speeds of 800mhz.

The only noticeable difference I noticed, was when I updated with the F6 update, Core 0 showed up as having a clock speed of 1600mhz, and Cores 1-3 still remained at 800mhz.

Gigabyte claimed to me that all I can do is wait till gigabyte releases another update regarding this issue, PARTICULARLY the C3 stepping which is causing interuptions, or w/e. If you like I can post my entire discussion with the GA tech. AMD seems to believe it may very well be the motherboard, but they've also suggested that the cpu could be at fault too, and just refuses to clock over 800. I've got a new msi mobo coming in to test this theory. Adjusting the multipliers has no effect. increasing voltage still has no effect. Windows refused to see the cpu registered above 800-1600mhz. both BIOS and windows recognizes that it's a PHENOM II 965 AMD cpu installed. but it wont recognize the clock speed.

When I updated to F7d, it popped Core 0 back down to 800mhz, and cores 1-3 still remained at 800mhz. BUT, this time I was able to adjust the multipliers inside BIOS and still boot (previous updates would not let me boot after adjusting hte multiplier) hitting F9 while in BIOS setup, showed indeed, the correct number for my clock speed. I boot back into windows, and voila 3.4gh is showing under control panel>system.

but yet again, I load up AOD, CPU-Z, and they both show that the cpu cores are running at 800mhz. AOD registers that both multipliers and voltages have been increased (And it shows this under you targeted or desired speeds, etc that you set it too) yet the "Current speed" still remains at 800mhz, ran prime95 again and all four cores ran at a 100% load, but still clocked at 800mhz.

Have YOU had any luck with this, or have you not received the cpu yet? I'm very interested in hearing what your experience is with this mobo and cpu.

redoubt9000 Which Windows OS are you using? Windows 7 has a power plan. This is a driver in windows that changes the cpu multiplier. They offer 3 plans Power saving, Balanced is default @ 1600Mhz, and Performance which is at full speed. To set it to full speed go to (well) here----> http://blog.enterpriseitplanet.com/g...-settings.html

    xp 64 sp2

plz dont tell me its xp... I'll rip the hair from my head if ya do! XD

also yes I did adjust power settings, and yet it persists >_< amd said that there were several boards in which were said to be compatible with future AM3 socket cpu's - when I mentioned issues with C3 being the culprit to amd i received the following reply

"The processor is a somewhat passive device in this regard. The processor has a CPUID string that helps to identify the processor. The motherboard BIOS has to detect and decode that string to properly identify the processor. It is possible that the motherboard BIOS may have an issue and is not properly detecting the processor and forcing a lower speed for compatibility to allow it to boot. Some Gigabyte motherboards did have issues with Phenom II processors running at half speed, but an update to the latest BIOS fixed that issue. If the motherboard is not detecting the C3 revision, which could explain a lot of the issues you are seeing.

We have not heard of any specific issues regarding revision C3 detection, but it is a possible issue to have."

When I mentioned C3 to Gigabyte, they in turn replied...

"If current cpu is C3 stepping, please check on our web later see if newer version bios release to correct C3 ID detection issue."

almost as if this was a routined answer in response to this problem...

well... I guess I may have to throw in the towel, considering this mobo IS over two years old. Unless I hear good new from the OP, I'll be waiting for the new mobo to get in, and I'll see if any issues arise.. Heck I needed to get a new mobo and upgrade to DDR3 ram anyways XD

    thank you for the replies.
I have not bought the cpu yet, but i have flashed to F7D.I've been holding off because i won't be able to return it if it won't work with my board.
Anyway i can no longer overclock the 9850,when i do cpuz sees it as 1.2 ghz
and windows 7 sees it as 2.8 ghz.
And yeah i disabled cool and quiet as well, but F7D did seem to fix my cold boot problem that started when i installed my asus 5870.Not sure what to do at this point.
    Thanks.

hope it works out for ya in the end. Perhaps it's time to make the move towards AM3 dedicated boards, and DDR3 RAM? :)

I was really hoping to hear that you got the cpu and that you got everything to work dandy.. it would've given me some hope at least :P lol

I'll know tomorrow or tuesday when I get the new board in, if it was just the cpu all along or not... >_<

artdrivers, the power options were set to high performance since the day i installed win7.I believe that gigabytes F7D bios are either buggy or incomplete.after all they are beta's.No worry's though i can wait for them to release a proper bios.
my pc is not out dated yet,so it's not really a problem.
