    thanks for all the help.

I did get the board rma'd in the end and it turns out it is faulty! I should be getting a replacement Wednesday/Thursday.

Please let me know how you get on with the board swapped out because I am getting very similar symptoms, except my fans don't even spin up, though I do have them all on board controllers.
    CPU: i7 920
PSU Zalman 850 (tried with all 8 connected only as route through Zalman GS1000 case makes connection very tight).
Not yet tried checking with either a diff psu, or reseating the CPU as it dropped in beautifully first time and this is not exactly my first build...
Have tried with each memory stick individually in DDR's 1 and 3.
    (Mem. is Corsair xms3, 2GB, 1333, 9-9-9-24)
    Have reset CMOS.
Have also tried using the onboard power button with the case disconnected in case of a fault with the GS1000. One difference - brief red light on the overclock reading (freq LED) I think - too brief to spot easily).

    cheers

Turns out my RMA is the Zalman 850 PSU of all things! Just plugged in a borrowed Coolermaster and everything fired up - rather suspected the PSU as the fans and drives were not powering, but now it's for sure. Now arranging the RMA and will see what comments I get back as to whether the issus is with a dud PSU or with compatibility.

Just relieved to have isolated the problem.
