Unhappy Can not install ANY version of Windows on EP45-UD3L!

When I first tried to install WinXP (so i can install Win 7 upgrade after), the BIOS could see the DVD-ROM drive, but not any install programs. Turns out that it has to be one of the first 4 devices, but even with no SATA drives connected, the IDE DVD shows as the second to last drive in the BIOS. I connected an IDE-to-SATA converter (Vantec) and it worked great! I tried my trusty Win98 boot floppy and it finally recognized the DVD-Rom, so, I ran /I386/Winnt.exe from the WinXP disk and the installation began. After it copies files for a looooong time (Does Microsoft force 1x speed on the drive?), it gets to the "Starting Windows" part and then the blue screen of death shows up, giving "PCI.SYS" as the culprit. So, I delete everything on the HD and start again, this time booting directly from the CD. Same thing.

So, I figure I'll try to install Windows 98 and then WinXP from that and then Win7 from that...

When Win98 gets to the restart part, I get an "insufficient memory to run windows" message, even though I have 4GB, tested by MemTest86+. I tried one stick and that didn't help. All the memory shows up in the BIOS, too.

So, I figure, Ok, I'llgo even one step further back and try to install MSDOS 6.22.....It installs without a SINGLE problem! But, when I try to install Win98 from that environment, I get the same insufficient memory message.

After trying several desperate things, including using Copy Commander to copy an installed WinXp installation from my wife's computer (with all devices removed in safe mode beforehand). It just rebooted over and over. (I know, this is not the best way to do this, but I'm getting REALLY desperate!).

So I'm back at square one. I can not install any OSes except MSDOS...

What is the BIOS vers. installed?
Doesn't matter what IDE order is you can always change disk boot otder in Advance BIOS Features, or select the boot drive on the fly by pressing F12 at boot time.
What video card do you have? Any other add-on cards?

There is a workaround that i was reading the other day about upgrading from XP, but it might be a lot of work...dunno.

    Here check this out...

The first time I tried installing Win 7 using this same MB the install would never complete. I changed to a different DVD drive and every thing went fine.

Do not do upgrade installs of OS's. There will be all sorts of useless junk left in the registry file. You do not need to have an OS actually installed to do an upgrade; all you need is the CD/DVD that you put in the drive when the new OS looks for the old one.

Thanks guys for your replies. It's been a nightmare the last week or so, but I finnally got it working: It was caused by the version of Windows XP Pro that I had. When I "slipstreamed" SP2 (using my wife's computer), it installed perfectly, then I was able to install Windows 7 64 bit without a hitch! (Dual boots great!). I may uninstall WinXP at some point in the near future, though, because so far I have found very little that doesn't run correctly on Windows 7 (64).

Anyway, I have another strange thing, which I will add here, although maybe I should start a new thread?

Well, when the system shuts down (either WinXP or Win 7), it immediately starts loading the OS again! Very strange. Restart works, and going into sleep mode works fine, but shutdown works basically like Restart. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!
    Russell

p.s. Windows 7 is GREAT! A little bit of a learning curve for some things (quick links, etc) but overall very fast and stable.

I have flashed the latest BIOS and the 650watt PSU seems fine. Something tells me it's a BIOS setting, but I can't figure out what it could be...

It's not a huge big deal, because I'm in love with sleep mode :D (which works as expected).

    Thanks for the reply, though.
