    Default 8Gb memory & P35-DS3R(rev. 2.1) or P43-ES3G (Rev 1.0)

    Hello,

I'd like to install 4 x 2Gb in my system to run Windows 7 Pro. Currently I have an E8400 running at stock speed installed in the P35-DS3R(rev. 2.1) with Windows XP Home.

The memory I have to use is 2 matched pairs of

    Corsair XMS2 CM2X2048-85005C5 1066MHz 2048MB 5-6-6-18 2.10V Ver 4.1

My question is a general one:

Is this combination of motherboard, CPU and memory a viable one with both the CPU and the memory running at or close to stock speeds?

I have had the memory installed but got system crashes with both XP Home and Windows 7 RC as well as error reports from memtest86+-4.00.

I could replace the motherboard with P43-ES3G (Rev 1.0) but would prefer not to.

My graphics card is a Gigabyte GV-RX24T256HP and I have quiet an old PSU from QuietPC which I believe is 300W. I would be happy to replace either of these if necessary.

In my opininion your PSU might be the cause of your problems. I also think that you don't need to change motherboard. P35-DS3R is fine and I used to have until recently. It's a fantastic mobo!
You should find a better PSU from a friend and test it to see if your system is stable.
Later when you stabilize your system you might consider a 64bit Windows (Seven preferably) in order to take fully advantage of 8Gb memory!

    Thanks for the reply.

I have access to a new Corsair 400W PSU, CMPSU-400CXUK. I've an idea I might have already tried it but that might have been at work in another system so I'll certainly give it a go.

Do you think 400W is enough?

Apart from the motherboard, CPU and memory I've got a 1Tb Samsung HD, A Samsung DVD-RW and a Samsung DVD-ROM as well as an internal memory card reader and a floppy drive.

I've got the 64 bit version of Windows 7 ready and waiting to go with the memory so I'll keep my fingers crossed that the PSU sorts the problem.

    Thanks again.

8GB may be possible though you may need to compromise DDR rate.
I don't think your PSU is the reason of your problem though you may need a better one.
If you have not loaded BIOS optimized defaults please do so.

Can you boot and run stable with 1 pair(4GB) installed in slots 1 & 3, and in slots 2 & 4? If this is possible it will be a good idea to run memtest86+ on each pair for 6+ passes.

Could you post a screen capture as described in step 4 in this post? No need for EasyTune.

You can download memtest86+, MemSet and all the programs that are needed for the screen capture in http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/late...y-tools-30530/.

Thanks for the reply Chike. I'll try your suggestions and report back in a few days when I get the time to run the tests.

Outcome first: memtest86+ reported errors every time I ran it.

I loaded BIOS optimised defaults each time before running memtest86+ and tried both my old 300W PSU and the new 400W Corsair I've borrowed from work.

I tried both sets of memory pairs with the old PSU and have just tried one pair with the 400W Corsair.

I also tried increasing the DDR voltage by 0.3V as suggested by a tech support from Gigabyte via their website as the default is 1.8V and the RAM is 2.1V.

I've included a screenshot as requested as an attachment. This is from Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit RC running on 2x2Gb

I also ran memtest86+ with my 2x1Gb Crucial Ballistix PC8500 sticks installed on their own and that reported no errors in 6 passes.

Each time I ran memtest86+ I just used the default test.

With my old 300W PSU Test 8 was generating loads of errors. Tonight with the 400W Corsair Test 5 generated about half a dozen errors both with the voltage at 1.8V and at 2.1V.

Have you tried increasing MCH OverVoltage +0.1 for the 2x2GB tests? If not please do. Also check PC Health for the actual applied ram voltage.

BTW I see a final F13 BIOS is available, about 3 month newer than the beta version you have.

EDIT: Could you post your full BIOS settings for the tests using the template in this post?

Thank you for the reply Chike.

You know I thought I'd got the latest BIOS, I'm sure I used the Gigabyte @BIOS software in the last couple of months. Anyway, I've updated it now.

I'll try to post the BIOS settings this evening but I might not be able to run any more tests until next week.

I checked PC Health in the BIOS and it appeared to be reporting the actual RAM voltage to be 2.24V or thereabouts, and that was with it set to Normal in the BIOS. I'll double check that as well.

I'm not sure where to access the MCH OverVoltage but if I can I will.

    Thanks again.

Usually we recommend not to use @BIOS but if you survived it never mind.

MCH OverVoltage is in M.I.T, while you are there you can also try setting Performance Enhance standard.

@Bios has been responsible for sometimes "bricking" a mobo.
Q-Flash is much safer. Check out the BIOS Flashing - A "How To ~ Qflash Guide" for detailed flashing info.

Press [Ctrl] + F1 from the main bios screen before you enter the MIT section. This will provide access to all of the overclocking options and voltage settings.
