Default Disappointing SATA speeds on EX58 UD4. Any tips?

I have a crucial 64gb ssd as my OS drive. Reads are very good (175MBs) but writes are slow (80MBs).

Transfers between my other SATA hard drives are also sometimes slow, dropping from say 90MBs to 45MBs. I installed the latest intel chipset driver for the southbridge controller, but I'd like to know if there's anything else I can do to troubleshoot potentially sub optimal SATA performance.

I also use one of Gigabyes GSATA controllers for a drive, but not sure what difference that makes.

I have 1 SSD, one cdrom, and 4 other hard drives connected to the mobo's 6 intel SATA ports. I wonder if this is too many?

    Thanks

you could try updating the ssd's firmware, does it have the trim option?

Thank you, yes, it has the very latest firmware which supports TRIM.

Regardless of the ssd, I still get slow speeds from HDD to HDD. I've read about jumpers on the drives but am not aware of ever fiddling with them. I also presume they're all in IDE mode as set up in bios.

    No RAID

With other Gigabyte motherboards, the Gsata ports have worse performance than the Intel sata ports.
Is your o/s drive connected to the first sata port (SATA2_0).
Is your cdrom drive connect to the last sata port (SATA2_5).

You might want to try connecting your cdrom drive to a Gsata port.

To isolate different issues run disk benchmark like ATTO on each of the drives.
AFAIK the GSATA ports are not much on the performance side.

Try to run SSD Tweak Utility v1.3.

The software is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7 (both 32 and 64-bit).

It's also worth mentioning that the program only makes adjustments to Windows at the OS level, so it should work with any SSD brand or model.

The SSD Tweak Utility recommends which settings to disable for optimal SSD performance, and if you're a little unsure there is an auto-tweak feature that offers a brief walkthrough.

Thanks guys. It's now quite reliable: if I move a large (5gb) movie, it'll start transferring at round 100 MB/s, according to windows 7 copy paste dialog.

But halfway through, invariably, the rate will drop steadily down to 60 Mbs. I don't know why, it's annoying, I'd like it to stop. Thanks
