Quick reply as I have to run....

That is not to jump start the board AT ALL. It is ONLY to jump start the PSU to see if it is dead or not, you should not have it connected to your board at all while doing this (In case you do it wrong)

Good luck with further troubleshooting, gotta run for now though!

I tried the cmos clear button for a minute. Didn't help, not sure that it was empowered. I tried that green and black ground pins trick. The system fans which I connected to the motherboard didn't work, but the dvd-rom did open and shut, which it would not do when the blue light was flashing. Steve

have you tried with another psu? the one you have could be faulty or not compatible with that mb

I was worried about the compatibility of the GeForce 9600 graphics card. I found two cases where the system specs of posting users used the Corsair power supply, my graphics card, and this motherboard. It was on the Nvidia forums.
One case, the power supply was a 550 not my 650. So they are compatible. I don't have an alternate 24 pin power supply. I can try to see if the older 20 pin power cable will work. But it doesn't have a connector for the graphics card. Maybe there is onboard graphics, or I can use an older graphics card.

The power supply works or there would be no power to open the dvd-rom tray or make the internal power button flash blue. I have had two new motherboards which didn't work. I have had power supplies that have failed, but never one which was new out of the box, nor have I heard of that. I would think that a failed motherboard is about 100 time more likely to cause this problem, due to component failure, once incompatibility has been ruled out, since mainboards are fragile compared to psus. I just tried to connect this the older style power cable and it doesn't match up at all. I don't have a newer psu with the right power cable to test this with.

well i know gigabyte mb's are very choosy when it comes to psu's,mabe it just doesnt have anough power to fire up the cpu ect,or its faulty even if it opens the dvd drive doesnt mean to say its not faulty, cant you borrow a psu? you need a 24 pin one for it to work and that mb doesnt have onboard graphics

But i can say one thing positive.
When i tried my old psu, a Antec 500W Earthwatch, i got enough power to the motherboard so that the cpu fan started to spin and it began to start boot for a few seconds but then it died. Just like when you try to start a car that's a bit sour. I thonk that it was too weak to fully give the power needed to go on. With my new psu i got no response whatsoever.
I'm going to send it back to the webshop so they can test it.
I've got the same motherboard as you mine is rev 2.0 and my system is running on a "antec 500watt", now the system is the x58a-ud3r - I7 930@4.1GHZ 1.296 vcore - 12GB DDR3 1600 - GTX460 - 3 HDD and 2 DVD-RW's and i have not ever had a problem with it.

I appreciated this post. This clearly indicated that the problem was the motherboard and not the psu. A brand new psu is extremely unlikely to exhibit intermittent behavior, there has been no time for wear and tear to degrade the coils. Motherboards OTOH, have much much thinner wires and are fragile. I think that it is either Dell or HP that ships their systems with 300 watt psu. For higher end systems, they use a 450 watt psu. You have a 500 watt psu. Suggestions that a Corsair 650tx don't have enough power for a cpu with a stock fan, a not so powerful graphics card, one HD and one dvd-rom seem unrealistic to me, not impossible but so highly improbable as to not be worth mentioning. I have a friend who has built over 60 systems for customers. Never once has he had a new defective psu. But, I think the average for a new defective motherboard is about 1 out of 20. Why would you need to press the clear cmos button on a computer which has never booted? What would that fix?

I think the idea to test with a different psu is good because Gigabyte will likely refuse to RMA it without such a test. So I'm going to buy a used known working power supply with a 24 pin cable.

i would try psu first just to be 100% sure, you can get doa or faulty items from new,if no luck then its looking like the mb is faulty

First I rented a tested power supply with a 24 pin cable. No power when I tried to boot up. This psu only
had the 4 pin 12V auxillary power hookup, while my motherboard has room for 2 x 4. So this test wasn't ironclad. I brought in my new psu and had it tested and it was aok, good voltages. The tech said to me that it is either the motherboard or assembly. I think computers are easy to assemble properly and besides I've rechecked stuff at least 3 times. Maybe I should have him diagnose it for $75 just in case Gigabyte wants assurance that the problem resides in the motherboard before they will issue an RMA.

    Exclamation Re: GA-X58A-UD3R, no power..

well it would have fired up with just a 4pin psu power cable,i ran mine this way with a 300w psu while i waited for my 1050w to arrive, gigabyte wont insist they will just charge you a handling fee if no fault found,i think you might be right on the mb and just rma it but its up to you,

have you left the mb battery out overnight? just to be 100% sure then try? could be gpu but it would start up atleast and show nothing on the monitor if it was that

P.S another thing to do is a bench test set up the mb outside the case on wooden table or cardboard box and see if it boots up,just incase your shorting somewhere inside the case
