Default GA-X58A-UD3R - Can only see 8GB of 12GB with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

    I had a new system set up with the GA-X58A-UD3R motherboard, an intel i7 950 CPU 3.06 GHz, 2 6GB 3x2GB DDR3 1600MHz memory installed.

When booting into Windows 7, Windows only recognizes 8GB of RAM. The BIOS is F4 so I am assuming it is the latest and I looked at MSCONFIG, BOOT, Advanced Options, and the Maximum Memory field is not checked. How can I see all 12GB in the system?

test each stick one at a time first in all three white slots one at a time,it should boot with just one stick in any of the white slots...if not then that slot or module is faulty

Thanks for replying. One thing I forgot to mention is that when I run CPU-Z, it recognizes 12288MB. Do I still need to test each stick seperatly?

I went into Control Panel-System. It shows 12GB, 8GB usable. That's alot of waste. It seems that the RAM is working. What if I only had 8GB in the system? How much RAM would be usable?

    Thanks for your help.

Some might be reserved for video.

    Use SiSoft to find out.

Also, check to see if you are using ganged memory. Unganged is reportedly faster and I think this might be causing the discrepancy (I used to have this before, unganged it and now it is fine)

i dont know if you can turn it off,but i wouldnt worry,8gb is plenty and having 4gb reserved for your hardware is a good thing as it wont stress any other things that your using your ram for

Reserved for what hardware? What kind of graphics controller and application would benefit from 4 GB of DDR3?

With 32-bit OS one might have to leave some physical RAM unused, because the memory addresses are needed for other hardware. But not in 64-bit OS. For examlpe, Vista 64 on GA-EP45-DQ6 does see 16 GB without a hitch.

    Wiz,

I hope you may find what is stopping your OS from being able to use all of your physical RAM.

In my case, I use a 32 bit OS, limited to just 4GB of physical RAM.
As I have 6 GB installed, I use the extra RAM as a ramdisk using this SW, which may use otherwise unusable RAM:

    RAMDisk - Software - Products & Services - Dataram

    Good luck,
    Jure Z.

You'll need to increase the QPI/VTT a bit more. you can try ~1.3V and cl9.
