Thread: i7 930 bug

Only when overclocked. If the Ram is close to 1600mhz it does this. If it is under 1600, but the CPU is clocked over 4.1ghz it will show 6 installed and 2 usable. I am unsure of bent CPU socket pins. Would need to take a really really close look at it. I was thinking of swapping my RAM with my bro's to see what happens... If something is bent, hell it gives me a reason to get a new board lol. Never had this problem with my last i7, and im 100 % sure i had installed the cpu spot on. Any other ideas? I mite even just buy another CPU and board to see whats what.

Yes, you would need to remove the CPU and look at the pins under a good bright light. Be CAREFUL if you do this, a few people in the past have actually bent pins trying to check!

Sounds like you may be ok there though since it all shows up when not overclocked, but it is worth checking out if you have the time.

Different memory test is a good idea, it very well could be faulty memory.

If different memory does the same, it is either a bent pin/pins, or your settings which I can help with. I can cause this anytime on the fly with incorrect settings, so it can be easily caused by that.

See Eva2000's post here for more info on how settings can cause these issues

Heres the thing though, my bro's identical setup (besides his board being rev. 1.6 does the same thing only he can clock his memory over 1600mhz. A small vcore bump fixed it.

Ram swap first, then check pins, then go over settings. I highly doubt its the settings but you would very well know better than i would. Let me put a template together and have ya have a look. Thanks LSD once again.

Check this out, when i get windows to show 6gb installed/ 2 usable, my SSD disk space increases by that amount of ram lost ( 4 GB)

type in msconfig/boot/advanced and makesure all memory is unchecked

also look in windows task manager/resource monitor is it showing the missing ram as hardware reserved?

just to show you what my system is showing

Any progress with the info I gave you above?

Let me know, I can show you my taskmanager with and without the issue, caused by incorrect settings. No matter what, if you do not see 6GB (614xMB) in taskmanager under Physical Memory Total, or as shown above, then there is a problem. Some apps may see all 6GB, but if it does not show 6GB total where I just mentioned then there is a issue and the memory will not be used.

Unsure why your SSD increases like you noticed? Probably just some glitch because windows is unsure how to deal with the 6GB it sees but can only access 2/4GB

Thanks warren and LSD. I have not got around to checking for bent pins. that WILL be tonight when i do have time. What i did do for now is lower my cpu multi to 21x and increase blck to 191 to keep me right above 4ghz with slightly faster ram. 192blck works, 193 is where i lose the RAM. Any idea why the lost RAM is being added to diskspace? Regardless i will probably keep these current settings as anything higher needs way more voltage and gets much too hot. I will try and post my template tonight . Will also need to swap ram, remove the cpu , check my pins, reseat, HUGE HEADACHE. But i kinda like it... This 930 @ 4ghz runs 15-18c cooler than my last chip with .2v less vcore

I really need to check my task manager and see what its doing with that 2-4 gigs of ram. That should almost clear everything up. I really really doubt its the ram, unless it just happen to go bad . these used to be some awesome overclocking sticks :-(

Hmm, well if you can get 192 Bclk with all your memory bent pins may not be the issue at all, but I would still check though. It may just be a slight memory incompatibility with the BIOS, some minor fault in your memory kit itself, or of course it's still possible to be settings too.

Alright guys, pulled the CPU last nite and noticed some MX-3 where it should not have been . Also pulled all the ram air dusted the slots as well as the sticks. Damnit. Forgot my 8 megapixel camera. And even after all that i did not try to get my RAM any higher . Did a few runs of IBT and did drop 2 degrees :-) . Gonna play around with the bios some more and maybe even load a previous bios. From looking closely ans carefully under a bright led lite , i did not see anything unusual but of course i know a high res camera is a must. I will my other options a few more times before i pull the cpu again.
