    Default Help me improve/optimize my EP45-UD3P and Q9550

    Title pretty much says it all. Below is my template that I've been running for a while and when I first loaded it up it was stable and I haven't had any BSOD's or freezing on it. I would like to have a higher FSB or memory if possible and if not, at least a fine tune on what I am running would be nice. I'm not really looking for a much higher CPU clock since I just don't need it but a little wouldn't hurt, even a downclock wouldn't hurt either. I do love this board but all the options just create a huge headache. I have spent hours trying to improve what I have and sometimes I can get into Windows but will freeze while running OCCT, other times I'm not so lucky. If you can help me improve it I would appreciate it.

    My Q9550 is an E0 and I have a GeminII (older style) on it with a 120mm fan and it stays pretty cool. My memory is 8GB (42GB) of G.Skill F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK.

    I know there's a lot of Auto but it works and if I knew everything, I wouldn't ask for help :) I will be checking out the "Memory Timings Explained W/ Suggested Timings & Memset VS. BIOS" thread later on.

    You need to start over before I can advise. You are using fail safe BIOS settings and this is not good.

    Please load optimized defaults and then save/apply/reboot back to the BIOS. Then reset your SATA/Disk settings and then try your overclock again with similar settings. Then once you have done that and if you still have issues post us your new settings and we can advise back.

    Hmmmm, I'm on my laptop now and I loaded optimized defaults then added my overclock and I see no difference in other settings. I went up a little in FSB to 465 and about 3 minutes into OCCT Linpack, it froze. Below is what I'm using now, any suggestions? All my temps at time of freezing were under 60C so it shouldn't be that.

    After reading around this forum (great great posts btw) I've come up with the following. I will probably lower the CPU multiplier and some voltages but it's just for testing. Any advice?

    Well, that last one freezes inside of Windows. I'm running Memtest test #7 now and so far there's no errors. I'm wondering if I need to up the MCH voltage since I'm dealing with 8GB of RAM?

    What is your goal regarding FSB/CPU?
    To avoid confusion leave any reference value that's at default on auto.
    Having your system specs in your forum signature will help.

    Ok well my last template, it failed in Memtest towards the end so I restarted and reset to optimal defaults and ran Memtest again just to make sure my hardware wasn't faulty. It passed.

    Man, I just tried 455MHz FSB and it froze up. Basically, I'm looking for an overall improvement in system performance. Higher FSB or memory clocks or better timing or even lower voltage. I don't NEED a faster CPU right now but for down the road, it may be nice. So far the only stable thing I've done is the first one I've posted. I was contemplating 500MHz FSB and my RAM running at 1000MHz but damn... I'm stuck :) Right now I'm going to load defaults and mess with this later.

    Maybe there's a template for 500MHz FSB (or perhaps higher) that could be modified?

    Did you load optimized or not? If you just changed a few settings that you noticed how we know which you are using, instead of loading optimized, then that is no good and will only hinder your progress.

    Not at all trying to be unhelpful or make you feel as if I don't want to help, I just want to get you started off in the right direction before we get going.

    So, please do load optimized if you didn't already.

    If you have, please now let me know which you want help with for now, 450+ FSB or 500? Then I can give you a full set of settings that should help you get started.

    Again please do not take my comments the wrong way, I am only trying to help you get going the right way is all.

    No hard feelings :) You're a guy with tons of knowledge, I've seen a LOT of your helpful threads and posts about the UD3P. You want to make it easy to help people, I get it. Also, I appreciate it that you take the time to explain as well as get the point across that you're not trying to be a jerk. There's a lot of people in your "position" that would rather just flame or lock the thread.

    Anyway, I did load optimized defaults for the MIT page (F7 I believe?) since I didn't want to screw with having to setup my RAID and other stuff again. My 450FSB worked with optimized defaults but I couldn't get anywhere else and I got frustrated (yet again :D) and am actually running optimized defaults right now.

    I don't honestly know where I want to go right now. I do have a couple of thoughts:
    500MHz FSB would be nice with 3.5GHz for the CPU and 1000MHz for the memory. Maybe I could tighten the screws on the memory timings then and lower it's volts as well.
    450/460MHz FSB would be interesting to run about 900MHz and REALLY tighten the memory down, possibly 5-4-4-12 with some extra volts.
    Finally, I did see that my memory was barely unstable in Memtest at 1128MHz so maybe 1110MHz or so is possible with some kind of FSB combination (MCH Frequency Latch @ 333 and Multiplier at 2.40) unless that's a bad idea?

    My problem is, I don't know what's better. There probably isn't much of a difference but I really want to squeeze the performance out of my memory. For the CPU, I'm flexible. I just don't want to push the volts a lot. 3.2-4.0GHz would be ok. Knowing how to set it up for 3.8-4.xGHz would be nice for the future but now I just don't need it.

    A few bits of info:
    I have a Cooler Master GeminII with a 120x38mm Delta on the CPU.
    I have a home-made memory & northbridge cooler.
    I do plan sometime to buy a new cooler such as the Prolimatech Megahalems so I would be future-proofed in at least 1 area :)

    Thanks for your understanding! I only try to reiterate that (Loading Optimized) because sometimes users will think it does not matter, or find which settings allow us to know and then simply change those and think it is ok, and it's not because there are hidden settings that will not get set properly.

    RAID is fine with loading optimized, you just have to be sure to go back to the BIOS and set RAID again before windows after you load optimized, apply, and reboot.

    500 FSB may be tough for you to get if your just starting at this, especially with a quad. Using 2.40B at high FSB (Above 400) may or may not work, it all depends on the memory itself, and the voltages you are willing to push. Now 2.66D would work for you, but that may put the memory too high at 450 FSB

    Well I can help you with settings for sure, in full, but I need to know what CPU Speed you want to run. Unsure now because of your last comment about 3.8-4Ghz would be fine but you just don't need it. If you want help with stock FSB and just faster memory speeds or timings I can do that too no problem, I just need to know which you want to work on now before I advise

    Nice NB/Ram cooling, how much difference on your NB temps did that make? Have you see the G.Skill memory cooler? It looks very cool and I think it is only $12-13, let me know if you want a link.
