No luck this morning - 2gb ram was detected on the first boot. I mentioned the problem I was having to my dad on the phone last night and he mentioned that it could be something called a dry joint, which would explain why things work okay after the comp's been on for a while.

whatever it is when its warm its expanding the ram slot or trace making contact and giving you full ram, when its cold its not making very good contact

I'll try to find somewhere/someone I can acquire a kit from. Failing that, I'll see if anyone on OCAU knows an actual good comp place in Melbourne.

Hmm, dry joint? That sounds plausible for sure, wonder if this is the actual cause of many cold boot issues around here?

Yes, please try some other memory and see if this helps, maybe G.Skill PCB is a fraction of a cm to small and is causing a dry joint?

So I was asking around and found a friend who has some DDR3 memory but discovered something interesting in the process. He says he also has a 1600mhz 6GB G.Skill NQ kit (he wans't sure of the exact model number), running at the default settings w/ an Asus P6T mobo. I explained the problem I was having and then he mentioned that sometimes when he starts his comp, only 4gb of 6gb of his memory shows up in the bios, then he has to restart to comp to get it all to show up.

Now this could be a gigantic coincidence but it would seem unlikely? I still have to procure another kit I suppose.

I haven't seen it often enough to say all/most G.Skill users have this issue, or that it is common for their kits to be semi-faulty, but it does say something I think.

Not enough users posting with them here having issues to day for sure though, could be more common than other brands?

I do know many users who have this issue, if they do not have bent pins or faulty modules, only have it due to incorrect settings and end up thinking it is something else. I can cause it on the fly with several different sets of memory, with incorrect QPI/Vtt, Vdimm, or Uncore multi's, even some timings will do it too.

Hope you can get a new set easy so we can find out if your current set is the problem or what.

I'm just mentioning it while looking for another kit.

Could be both kits incompatible slightly, faulty, or you both just have not found the sweet spot for settings yet.

No one close to you that you can borrow a kit from, so you don't have to buy one?
