He's thinking of buying a 12gb kit so if he does he'll let me play with it first. Otherwise I'll just buy a kit from somewhere I can return it for a refund later.

I take it you mean a friend or family member eh?

If so cool, hope he does so you can test with.

    Friend from uni.

Anyway, while I'm sorting that memory thing out, I put the drive in my old comp and ran a chkdsk on it and got the following results.

    Code:
    C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk /R H:

Bad clusters aren't a good sign, at least there's only one of them (assuming their size is 4kb). I did a Google search and a found a post by a Microsoft MVP that said somethign along the lines that once the OS can see these bad cluster it's already too late? Does I need to RMA the drive too? :\

Also, I ran a quicktest with the WD tool and just got this result.

Well that is only 1 bad cluster this time around. You could have had many previously already marked and dealt with

What do you see in Crystal Disk Info, for SMART data? It should show you reallocated sector count, post up an image if you are unsure what is bad and what is not.

Looks like you should RMA though, but lets see the SMART data.

    Smart Info:

I'll salvage what I can and RMA it. Is it necessary to zero the entire drive first?

Ohh ya, RMA time for that drive!

Your computer guy was right about that for sure. 140 is the threshold and you have 200 which means 53 sectors have already been reallocated

Here is some more info if you want to see how that works, your disk would be similar to the second example I think

I realise this isn't very helpful but I found an old HDD lying around (it's marked 10/2003) and chucked it in (in the SATAII port rather than SATAIII). I installed Windows, after setup rebooted chkdsk run and cleaned up some bad files. Booted to desktop and installed drivers, set chkdsk to run again, rebooted and it's finding bad clusters everywhere. Is it possible that these are caused by the underlying memory problem or the BIOS settings I'm using at the moment? I ask this knowing that it's much more likely the HDD is bad (which is why It was lying around not being used in the first place :P) but I thought it might be worth mentioning.

Judging by the sounds it's making now I'm pretty sure it's gone, lol. Just running some DirectX tests while I can to see if the GPU crash is still occurring.

I doubt it at all, probably just old dying drive is all. Put in a clean new drive and you will not find stuff like that.

Memory or BIOS issues can only cause corrupt data, not bad clusters, those are physically or magnetically damaged areas on the disk

GPU driver crashes with both 10.4 (latest) and 9.11 versions.
