I solved the problem with the drive recognition. I just had to find a place to re-assign it a different letter and it was recognized properly.

some programs wont run on win7,like games ect without you setting run as admin in the program properties, also sometimes you have to choose run in xp mode,or run in vista mode for compatibility reasons, then after youve done that certain programs will run fine

Can you post a screen shot of your "Disk Management cousole with the problem drive connected?

Never mind. I see you found it, which is exactly what I was thinking it was.... a drive letter issue.

    Thanks.

However, a few features don't work and I'm sure it is a driver not installed. When I build a new OS disk, can you specify which drivers need to be installed and which are on the board from the old OS install? Also, where was the thread with the links to the latest drivers for this board? Thanks.

when you install the os,just install the lan driver from the gigabyte cd,then when you can access the internet go to gigabytes website and download/install what you need like intel inf/lan/audio drivers and utilities like easytune, windows 7 should install all other drivers by itself

Remember all the problems I had installing the drivers for the hot-swap AHCI in XP. Now I must do it for Win 7. You said that was easier....so, how do I do it 'easier'....? Thanks.

you want to enable ahci for win7 without re-installing operating system??? follow this guide and it will enable ahci

    1.Exit all Windows-based programs.
2.Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
3.If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
4.Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesM sahci

5.In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
6.In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
7.On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

After this you’ll have to restart your computer, go to BIOS and enable AHCI. When you log in to Windows again, you’ll notice the installation of drivers for AHCI. Another restart will be required to finish the driver installation.

    +1 ^^

That is all you need to do to switch things around in windows 7 or Vista

Enable switching between all IDE/AHCI/RAID modes by changing "Start" Values in these keys to 0
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci\Start
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Pciide\Start
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStorV\Start

Thanks much both!...I'll give it try now...seems easy enough. I like 64 bit and Win 7 is a bit weird, have but haven't tried Vista yet. XP has most of my programs I need - many will not transfer - but is slower and can't utilize all the memory I have on the board, etc. Many other features of this board seem to be best in post XP OS! Speaking of which, I hear this board can even use some OS from Mac and there is even a forum dedicated to that....I can post the url for. I've not yet tried, but have the OS needed and will try on one disk in the swap bay. It takes lots of work and special drivers, from what I see on the forum, but for graphics and not being attacked by trojans etc. would be nice to use at times. I have on different disks in the swap bay different OS on each. So far it has worked out well, but it is hard to coordinate things or remember what is where...working on that via a huge 2TB backup disk. Thanks again.
