    Default ga-x58a-udr3 sata drive issues

I received a gigabyte ga-x58a-udr3 with a number of upgrades to my pc, and since putting together my new rig i've had nothing but problems with this motherboard. The first thing I noticed is that I was unable to start Windows 7 from an existing 160gb hard drive. The drive would bsod during load and restart. On the other hand my 1tb hard drive with ubuntu installed would load up with minimal problems, minimal meaning I would have disk checks every other restart, and the drive would unexpectedly stop while the os was loaded. Around this time I decided to back up the windows 7 drive and try to format and reinstall. During the install though the drive couldnt not be read by the Windows disk, but when viewed under ubuntu (before formatted as well) all the contents were there and showing (the partition was formatted as ntfs). I attempted to load drivers from the disk (the drives were installed on the ich10 ports), but regardless of which drivers were loaded the Windows 7 disk would not install on the drive and routinely return errors saying such. At this point I attempted to load Windows Vista on the drive and was greeted to similar errors. Around this time my ubuntu drive began to refuse to load and go into a series of disk checks without loading at all. I installed both drives back into the old box they were in, and found the ubuntu drive to be unloadable. Now both drives are installed back in the new box with the gigabyte board and have been moved to the gigabyte sata ports. I am still unable to load Windows 7 despite flashing the bios to the latest version, and Windows 7 still does not install on the freshly formatted disk. I have loaded the gigabyte sata drivers on the disk and find that doesn't help either, and my ubuntu disk is still unusable, except by liveCD. The sata ports in the bios are set to IDE, and I am frustrated with the fact that this board hasn't worked since I put it in my new box. I could use some assistance please.

I already did this, because after I flashed the bios the install took a very long time to come up.

The drives had been connected into ports 0 and 1 when the problems first originated and experienced the exact same problems as they are now plugged into 7 and 8. One of the drives is a western digital, and the other is a Seagate.

I'll give that a shot after I finish backing up one of my drives. When I do that i'll also reinstall the sata drives back to ports 0 and 1, and I forgot to mention the dvd drive is connected via ide cable.

Ok so I reset the CMOS and tried the install again. Still no go. Windows 7 keeps telling me it can't install on the drive. And I even used the ich10 drivers from the cd, and downloaded the newest ich10 drivers from the site, even though they couldnt be used by the install disk. I've been at this for 48 hours and have nothing but a corrupt disk, and a formatted drive to show for all my work. I think im just gonna return this board to newegg and get a new one.

Well I have good news now, I managed to recover my ubuntu partition and its loading as it should. Now only if I could install Windows 7...

Oh for the love of Zeus. The issue was having 2 or more drives connected while attempting to install Windows 7, I found the fix elsewhere. I can't believe that was a simple as it was. I just hope that I'll be able to load Windows 7 with both drives connected without BSODing. I'd hate to have a dual-boot system and have to reconnect and disconnect sata cables just to run Windows 7.

If your issues continue please give us your full settings from the BIOS in regards to SATA, post an image if you like. And of course mention what drives are connected to what ports as well, in case anything has changed.

If you find it wont install with both disks that is easy, install with only one and then connect your second disk and you should be fine and good to go.
