Thread: SLI X16 by X16 or X16 by X8

  1. #1

    Default SLI X16 by X16 or X16 by X8

Does it matter if I run SLI at x16 by x16, or is x16 by x8 result in the same performance?

I'm shopping for a new MOBO. And I only see X16 by X8, under $250.

And explanations plzzz!!! (I can even think of the key words to google. thats why im asking here.)

Hopefully the bandwidth or whatever of X16 by X8 is not even used and that's why x16 by x16 is not necessary.:)

    Thanks!

I believe it would not be fully used anyway, depending on the cards and applications in use, but you may want to wait for others to give you their thoughts as well.

There is plenty of boards that do x16 by x16 for less than $250, what are you looking to get?

    In order to run GTX470SLI.

    Gigbyte 1366 with two or more PCI-E 2.0 that run X 16 by X16.

Idk yet if i need 55 or 58 chipset.

If the performance is the same with X16 by X8. Then I'd go with X16 by X8 to save money.

(I'd have to see the proof by way of benchmark results or by way of snientific information.)

i have looked at a lot of web site in the past
if your useing the GTX 280 GTX 285 there not much differance but 16 is better but you would never see it in real world apps
if your useing the new DX11 cards like GTX 480 or GTX 470 the 16 x 16 is the way to go as there card use more bandwith
plus if you plan to use the motherboard a few years before upgrading again 16 x 16 is the way to go as newer card are made they will need more bandwith

    just my option on 16 x 16
but is all about what you are planing on doing with your rig the most gaming, web serfing, video editing, email ,music.

Just tested scores on my P55 and GTX470. If it runs 16x it scores the exact same in Vantage as it does in 8x. As long as it is a 2.0 slot, the difference is not noticeable at all.

    Thanks Chad!

I thought tech had not yet caught up with the bandwidth provided in current PCIE 2.0 slots. Of course 2 470's might just need x16 x 2, but maybe not?

Price-wise though, it costs just about as much for a P55 setup as it does for1366 if you shop around, so you might as well go with 1366 so you can have more choices when it comes to slot layout anyway and added triple channel bonus as well.

Of course the 980X is out, and 970 hex also coming soon for 1366

I had opportunity to try it, nope it doesnt matter. I had heat issues in the UD7 running SLI in 16 x 16. So I dropped it to the 3rd slot which only can run 8x, again same scores.

Either that or a 4.0ghz 860 and 2400mhz ram at CAS9 is a bottle neck in both tests.

    Glad to help!

Temps went down a ton, that was the impressive part. Sandwiched in the top two slots, my top card was hitting 100 degrees! Now with a 16x and an 8x slot poulated, they are 10 degrees cooling idle and loaded with extra voltage.
