    I answered my own questions - upgrading to the FE BIOS did not help with the wake from sleep problem - so I guess it is the ATI 5830 card that works better than the Nvida GTS 250 card or the Q9550 has a quirk that does not allow it to wake up after 3.7 GHz. Also, ProfJim we ended up on the Q9550 system with .825V for the Reference Voltages driven by the CPU Termination Voltage so that is a notch or two higher than the AUTO setting. Since it is/was stable under the FD BIOS I should leave well enough alone?

    At the risk of getting in trouble I'll ask the same question again - is there any way to check/view the Reference Voltages that are being set by the BIOS when they are left on AUTO? It looks like I have to go on faith if I leave them set to AUTO which is OK on the E8500 system since it is stable at 4 GHz and it looks like that is the recommended way to go.

    If your system passes IBT/LinX (10 passes) and Prime95 or OCCT extended stability tests (12 - 24 hours) with AUTO reference volt settings, there is no need to manually tweak the reference volt settings. When you upgrade or downgrade your bios version, there is no guarantee that the previous stable bios settings will still be stable with a newer or older bios version. I recommend that you repeat your stability tests with the newer FE bios.

    To further complicate things, if you moved all your hardware to another, identical motherboard and bios, your previous stable bios settings might not be completely stable on the newer motherboard.

    Most E8xxx systems require MCH Ref to be set one of more steps lower when overclocking with ~ 4.0GHz or higher speeds, using Lsdme's reference volt tweaking procedure.

    I've seen many S3 sleep issues with systems in the forum. I've had no problems with enabling hibernate mode with both of both of my GB systems. For some reason, using S3 with my systems left my video card fan running at 100% with when S3 sleep mode kicked in. To avoid any possible problems with my older systems, I only use the "turn off monitor" power saving option.

    Your earlier problems with your new video card were probably due to software leftovers after you uninstalled your previous video drivers and software. The following information is from the Driver-Sweeper download page at guru3d.com:

    Good to hear from you. I went nuts and built a system for the E8500 since I had an excuse to give one of my wife's friends one of our computers!

    I did run the Guru3D Driver Sweeper early on and that solved most of the problems. I just went one step too far and deleted the PhysX stuff which 3DMark Vantage needs. I thought it was part of the Nvida driver install.

    Yes, I'll have to step back and run the stability tests on the Q9550 system since I updated the BIOS to FE. The new BIOS did not solve the Sleep Wake-up problem but the Hibernate function continues to work just fine.

    The E8500 system runs everything I throw at it - OCCT, IBT(10 Passes) and Prime95 for 12+ hours so it probably has more GHz to go at least untill I get to the top of the Mushkin 2.40B strap. The E8500 system will Sleep and Wake-up without a problem. One more request, could you point me to Lsdme's reference volt tweaking procedure. It sure would be nice if there was a program like ET6 that would show what the reference voltages were actually running after being set by the BIOS. I got on this reference kick since we spent some time playing with the reference voltages trying to get 4+GHz out of the Q9550 and yet the E8500 and just runs 4GHz on AUTO but i'm sure I'll get in trouble with it too if it is there to had!

    Easytune will show you current ref values, but it's easy to tell you what they are if you leave them in auto.

    They will be exactly what you see in the BIOS set for Auto, based off the voltages they reference.

    Glad to hear that your new e8500 o/c has been so "easy".
    AnnandTech and several forum members have successfully overclocked their e8500 systems to 4.50GHz.
    Your Mushkin memory should be able to run at 1100MHz with 5-5-5-15 timings with 2.02 volts.
    You might be able to run them at 1140 - 1200MHz, possibly with somewhat looser primary memory timings and with 2.08 - 2.12 volts.
    My Mushkins are stable at 984MHz (2.00D) with 5-5-4-12 timings and tRFC = 50.

    Lsdme's suggestions are in his "How to setup CPU/MCH GTL Ref Voltages" thread where you:
    1. Temporarily set CPU Termination (VTT) = 1.20
    2. Make desired adjustments to either or both of these Reference settings (MCH Ref and/or CPU Ref).
    3. Set VTT back to the desired setting
    The following comment in your posted bios setting will make it perfectly clear which settings were used and applied:
    MCH Reference ----------- 0.7600V ------- : [0.???] 0.### set @ VTT = 1.20
    Where 0.??? is the adjusted value displayed after resetting VTT and 0.### is the new setting that you selected while VTT = 1.20 was temporarily set.

    Ok, I bit at the "easy" overclock! The attached settings are stable all I changed from the prior settings was I set the reference voltages manually based on Lsdmeasap's instructions. IBT ran 10 passes 37 seconds faster with the actual reference method - probably W7 was doing something in the background the first time. Now for the problem at hand, as soon as I increase the FSB beyond 422 to 435 IBT fails miserably on the second pass. I then increased the Vcore to 1.35625V and IBT fails on the third pass. I increased the Vtt to 1.26V and IBT fails on the second pass. Make it easy on me to get to FSB ~450, do I have to give it a lot more Vcore and/or do I have to play with the reference voltage(s)? Seems like you guys hinted that the reference voltages may come into play above 4GHz and have to be decreased one notch versus just the opposite for the Q9550 setup. Still a slow learner!

    450 FSB put all your ref's back in auto until you get there, then you can tinker with them if needed.

    2.40B and tRD of 8 at that FSB may be part of the problem, can you use 2.00D or 2.66D? If not try tRD 9 w/ 2.40B

    Other than that, yes your voltages look a bit low, very low to me actually. I'd suggest you look at 1.36-1.42 Vcore and 1.28-1.34 Vtt for 450 FSB

    Only sadness. I am trying to run at FSB 435 with a tRD of 9, as suggested. It seems like the more Vcore it get the worse it acts. I tried 1.38V Vcore, Vtt of 1.28V and it failed IBT on the second or third pass. I upped the Vcore to 1.38750V and upped the Vtt to 1.30V and it failed IBT on the first pass - wrong answer. The Mushkin Memory runs at FSB 450+ with a tRD of 8 on the Q9550 system? But this thing has sure hit some kind of a wall at FSB ~430. What words of wisdom do you have to try the 2.00D strap? Every time I attempt I end up with a system that won't even boot but if you think that is the issue what do I have to change in the settings in Post #17 to make it 2.00D friendly? I'm living up to the "Slow Learner" name tag!!

    Other thoughts:
    MCH Core that is too high or too low can cause boot or instability problems, 1.26 might help.
    It looks like you lowered MCH Ref 1 step (with VTT = 1.20). Try lowering MCH Core one or two steps with VTT = 1.20 and restore your desired VTT setting.
    CPU Vcore might need to be set to 1.3625 - 1.3750 or a bit higher.
    VTT (CPU Termination) can safely be increased where it is only 0.04 - 0.05 volts lower than CPU Vcore.

    When you post your new bios settings and results, please include the screen-shot in step #4 from this post that includes Memset, Cpu-z, ET6, and CoreTemp.

    tRD = 8 and 2.40B (1102MHz)at 459MHz with 2.02 volts and 5-5-5-15 timings was the best my system could do.
    With your cpu, you might be able to do a bit better before you need to switch to one of the 2.00 memory multipliers.

    Another option is to lower your CPU Clock Ratio to 9.0 and use a higher FSB.
