    Question GA-MA790FX-DQ6 ---> 2TB HDD Compatibility

    Hello ! Can anyone tell me if this motherboard will detect the full size of a 2TB HDD, like Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000, for example? Right now, the biggest HDD I've could check on it, it's an 1.5TB Seagate, which works fine. But, how about 2TB HDD? Thanks.

    i dont think it can unless you partition it into 2 1tb drives then it will see all available space

    I don't see why not, but this sounds like a good question for Hitachi Support.

    It should detect it, but you will only be able to use a partition just under 2T

    I've searched their website, and it says that the drive is compatible with the SB600 chipset. That means it will be detected at full size or it will just work, but on limited size?

    I put the question here, because I think the mb's chipset/BIOS does the job, I do not think the Hitachi tested that HDD with all the motherboards available to be able to give me a concrete answer. They can say it works on a 5 year old MB, just to buy it...

    Thanks for your replies.

    It's all about the chipset and OS/partition table choice.

    If they say it works with that chipset than it should be fine. Size limit of 2T is by OS partition type, you need to use GPT partions to utilize 2T or above

    Format a single 2TB HDD? I still don't know why not. But no drive will use all the space after formatting what ever size. They all use up some bits of space in the format process. Even a floppy starts at 1.44MB and ends up at 1.38MB after formatting. If you are using windows? A 2TB is the limit on 1 partition but after you format it will no longer be 2TB.
    If you want a larger than 2TB as a Windows boot drive no chance for that. The limit is due to the MBR partition table. Virtually every drive has 512 byte sectors and the partition table sector entry overflows at around 2.1TB. So you can't create a partition beyond ~2TB using MBR.
