Question Q-flash Intervals when stepping up several BIOSes

    Greetings Members,

    I am a proud owner of a Gigabyte GA-EX-58-UD5. Core i7 940, 1136, 3 channel Corsair XMS-3

I want to step up my BIOS to the Current f12-non BETA. I am at f5 now.

I am having good usage except with it having very picky S3 if I click USB mouse to sleep it blue screens to various errors usually internal power error, but if I hit ENTER key all suspends fine and recovers well also. takes about 5-8 secs to sleep 4 to wake.

I am interested in updating for the Gulftown update and the two memory capability and compatibility upgrades.

I read that You should not step over too many BIOS flashes. Is this true or can you just update it to the newest. IF not, flash every 2 or ??? Also If you flash to a certain bios does it include features of all bioses previous to it or do you need to flash to each one. Just being thourough and thought I would get some good advice from some more experienced members.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanx

no you can flash straight to the latest bios from f5 without any trouble, use q-flash to flash with though and not @bios,you will fix s3 sleep resume with new bios,it was fixed from f8 i think

Ya, no problem with that at all!

And S3 works in the later BIOSes as well, of course you must be 100% stable though still.

Thumbs up Re: Q-flash Intervals when stepping up several BIOSes

    Hello lsdmeasap,
Thanks for the 2nd approval. I am just going to follow your Q-flash guide and gigabytes to refresh myself and Update that BIOS. I remember the Q-flash being very simple as long as you pay attention during all steps. I strive for the most stable system first and foremost and I am assuming you mean that the system must be stable for S3 to work properly regardless of the improvements the new BIOs will make. IS that so?

    Thanx again,

Sorry for the late reply on this!

Yes, I meant the system needs to be fully stable before S3 sleep will work properly, regardless of if the BIOS has been fixed to work with it or not.

Thumbs up Re: Q-flash Intervals when stepping up several BIOSes

I flashed the Bios yesterday from f5 to f12. the flash update went fine and all was well.

Next I tabbed to check post to ensure EX58-UD5 F12 was there. it was.

Then I reloaded Optimized defaults and saved <F10>.

I then enabled my USB keyboard and Mouse in PC peripherals. Save and went to boot.

It told me BOOT MGR is MISSING after situating the DMI POOL process.

SO no BOOT of course. NO BOOT MGR, NO boot not Rocket science. WIFE says there I go again I broke my computer again. I say back evil one you bring foul jinxes to the tech hands. I said "when do I ever NOT solve a problem" BACK and learn

THought about it and realized I had it set up to boot from floppy then CD, then HDD. SO thinking simplest fix first change boot order HDD, CD,Floppy. Well that still would have a problem because it was going to the hardrive when I booted, but the MGR was still missing.

After More though... I have 3 SATA HDDs on Channels 0-1-& 3, Channel 2 is my SATA Optical,so...

Ta dah I realize change my HDD boot order, My system drive was lower than my storage and utility drives.

So in drive order pg up/ pg down- brought my system drive to the top of the list (when I loaded optimised it brought it down further in line up based on actual number, causing it not to boot) and I then saved the Drive settings to CMOS and rebooted, Voila..... All is fixed.

Boots Fine, way faster and S3 is fixed so far np's. Seem so much zippier and I am hoping random for no reason blue screen lock ups with (memory errors mostly) will dissapear. Had it running since then-no errors and good stability. Also checked memory with memtest overnight and it discovered 0 errors.

Thanks for listening and helping... TWEAKTOWN is the best group of megaminded techies Iv'e seen these guys and they are the masters of the new computer world order. lol THANX again all...!

Nice to see all is well now, even after the small scare!!

I was going to link you to our flashing guide so you would have known you needed to reset your hard disk boot priority, but you sounded like you already knew what you were doing for the most part.
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/bios...h-guide-27576/

I guess next time I wont assume, sorry bud!

Anyway, glad you got it all going smoothly now so the wife can stop laughing at you :)

Did you know your memory is only running at 1066Mhz? Surely it should be faster right? Let me know if you need help with setting that up properly

Great to hear S3 is working for you now too!
