Note: From the GB US website, your cpu is not supported!!

    Vender ---- Model ----------------------------- FSB
    Intel ------ Core™ 2 Duo E8400(3GHz,6MB) 1333 N/A (n/a = not supported)
    GA-N650SLI-DS4L (rev. 1.0) - GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - CPU Support List

Your motherboard is not AMD, it uses the Nvidia chipset.

    My N650SLI-DS4 had no problems running my E6750 at 7 x 489MHz.
The NB heatsink gets quite hot, it might help if you can place a cooling fan that will help cool the NB heatsink.

Were OPTIMIZED bios defaults loaded before you made made bios changes in the MIT section?
It will help if you post your settings from the MIT section and include your current voltage settings.
What brand/model cpu cooler are you using?

    Hi profJim.

Here's a link to some photos I took of the bios:

    ImageShack Album - 4 images

It's been rock solid for 2.5 years, but for the restarting problems which have plagued me for at least the last year.

Having said that, windows froze after the last restart - as I was writing a reply to you!

With the rise in the NB voltage from stock, it's now prepared to restart after 3-4 mins, down from 15. So it seems we're in the right sort of area.

I had put a fan on the NB whilst trying for a stable 3.8 about a year ago or so, but it hadn't helped so I uplugged it. Its's still there, perhaps I should re-attach it to the mobo.

Thanks for your response, any help is greatly appreciated.

edit:: I had not reset the mobo to optimised settings prior to changing the voltages.

sorry, edit again:: it's an Arctic 7, with a sliver thermal compound, can't recall exactly which one.

Well, windows just froze again, so I've backed the NB voltage back to +0.2. Still restarted reasonably quickly, and I didn't have to power-cycle: saved to CMOS and it actually rebooted, something it usually never does.

edit:: it froze again, then wouldn't go past mem test at post, then froze again going into bios.

I have backed off the NB over-volt altogether now.

In your bios, save your current bios settings as a saved bios profile. You should be able to save up to 8 different bios profiles.
Write down all your current bios settings.
To better help you, please provide the information in steps 1, 2, and 4 in this post. Ignore the ET6 screen-shot, but you can include the EasyTune 5 advanced display which shows the cpu speed and several system voltages from the Overclocking/Advanced Mode panel. Then:
    • Load OPTIMIZED bios default settings, and then re-enter your current bios settings.
    • Save these new optimized settings as a second saved bios profile.
    • Save/apply settings and exit.
    • Let us know if your system is any better.

What is your normal room temperature when you're running your system?
Have you ever run any stability tests, such as Memtest86+, Prime95, OCCT, LinX or IBT (IntelBurn Test)?

I'll get back to you late tonight after you've posted the above information.

I have loaded optimised settings: basically, one of the crashes I experienced seemed to corrupt my gfx driver - the gpu fan decided it was unnecessary, causing constant crashes in 2d mode after a few minutes.

Tried to uninstall driver, crashed midway. Left gfx card to cool, had a smoke, tried to calm down!

Used driver cleaner in safe mode, after having switched to optimised mode in bios, then restarted. Windows default drivers fired up the fan again, and I then reinstalled 10.5 ati drivers.

Fan turning now on GPU. May not bother re-overclocking tonight (it's one am here in Belfast, Northern Ireland), as am rather freaked out by near-loss of equipment: can't afford to replace anything atm. I seem to only mess about with these things when I can't afford to replace parts I may screw over.

Ambient temperature is probably about 19-20 degrees. Did run memtest a long time ago when initially overclocking, no problems.

PC is often up for days at a time, and do often undertake long gaming sessions which would stress CPU & GPU - v rarely, if ever, crash.

My ram is mixed - I've only just realised. I have these:

    CM2X1024-6400 Size: 2GB Kit (2 x 1GB)
Speed Rating: PC2-6400 Tested Speed: 800Mhz
Tested Latency: 5-5-5-18 Tested Voltage: 1.8
SPD Speed: 800Mhz SPD Latency: 5-5-5-18
Package: 240pin DIMM Fan Included: No

    And these:

    CM2X1024-6400C4 Size: 2GB Kit (2 x 1GB)
Speed Rating: PC2-6400 Tested Speed: 800Mhz
Tested Latency: 5-5-5-18 Tested Voltage: 2.1
SPD Speed: 800Mhz SPD Latency: 5-5-5-18
Package: 240pin DIMM Fan Included: No

It would seem I'm under-volting half my ram.

I'll gather more info as required: it's now 3am and I really ought to think about getting some sleep. Thank you both very much for your help so far.

    That may be the issue!

You may be able to explain this to them and get them to RMA your 1.8v set for a new 2.1 set, I would ask in the forums and via email so you get two responses

that is a nvidia chip set on that board ram you want to use from the 2 set you have CM2X1024-6400C4 Size: 2GB Kit (2 x 1GB) Speed Rating: PC2-6400 Tested Speed: 800Mhz Tested Latency: 5-5-5-18 Tested Voltage: 2.1
nvidia chip set need 2.1 ram voltage 1.9 is for intel on 775 socket
I remember this setting from my GA N680I-SLI board if i was you i would get these for that board

run voltage at 2.1 (+0.3v. ) and enable EPP (Enhanced Performance Profiles allow automatic overclocking to aggressive performance settings.)
