Default Athlon x2 5600+ Brisbane in older mobo?

    Greetings, new here.

I'd like to install an Athlon 64 x2 5600+ 2.9 ghz Brisbane cpu in a Gigabyte M55sli-s4 mobo, upgrading from a 4200+. This processor, which apparently was released sometime mid-2008, is not listed as supported on the Gigabyte website.

Other Brisbane cpus are supported however, and almost all use the F11J bios version. I'm using the older version F4. Anyone know if I upgrade the BIOS thusly if it will work? THANKS!

p.s. - I posted this question over at the AMD forum and the consensus was, maybe, maybe not. They also suggested a new mobo and Phenom, but the 5600+ is free if I want it and already well beyond my actual needs.

If it is not listed it is highly likely that it will not work.

If you have a processor that does for sure, and this questionable one you can easily find out though. Update the BIOS to the latest one you mentioned, then switch in the newer CPU and see if it will start

Thanks, guess I'll give it a shot. Will post results of the experiment.
