    Default GA-X58A-UD3R + G Skill Ram = 4/6 GB Usable issue (with a twist)

So let me explain my situation. First off, I have read as I recall probably the entire internet with relation to this issue. I am making this thread as verification to my conclusion, as I don't really have anyone I know that I can discuss with in person about this.

    Specs:

    *Intel i7 930
    *GA-X58A-UD3R
    *G Skill (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1333 ( F3-10666cl9t-6gbnq)
    *WD Black Caviar 1TB HDD
    *ATi HD XFX 5770

SO, I get the famous false recognizing 6GB (4GB Usable) statement on my system menu. It happened from day one of the install. I go into BIOS, only recognizes that I have 4096 MB of RAM, even though I have 6GB installed. The thing is though, it recognizes I have a 3rd stick in the mobo, but it wont register it...

So after countless hours of reading on the internet as far as causes are concerned I have made a list:

    *Bad RAM stick
    *Bent CPU pins
    *BIOS
    *Tightness of Heatsink/fan

After all the reading I went to bed. I had a huge headache from my dissapointment of a bad build experience. It was my first one after like 6 years so I was excited, but obviously not anymore. None the less, I wake today, boot up into bios just for giggles. Well guess what, now it is registering it as 6GB! wtf?

I reboot the pc just to see if its a false alarm. Nope it still is holding the 6gb. Then I shut the pc off, go get some breakfast. I come back after about almost 2 hours, restart, and now am back to my 4GB usable issue again.

So I take the ram out, and label them with stickers to distinguish them. I put each one in separately, into all the white slots, just to make sure a slot is not bad. No all slots are working. 2 of my sticks worked in all 3 white slots. Then I tried the final one, and it just powered up but did not display anything on the screen which makes me conlcude in this situation that I have a bad memory stick. The thing is though, if it was bad, why would it recognize it at one point? There may be something more that I am not looking at?

Here is a video as well:

Please guys help me out here, I am getting stressed out about something that I dont need to be stressing out about. I just want to enjoy my computer.

    Thank You

    -Louis

its a common issue with gskill ram and cold boots, once the pc/mb is warm enuff when you restart the pc it will register full 6gb,or maybe you need to raise your qpi/vtt voltage a little and set it manually,or maybe try another brand of ram...are you using the latest bios?? as this may help

I dont think its an issue of cold boot. As it did the opposite in this situation. It registered the 6gb on a cold boot, then later on it didnt.

Did you watch the video I linked? That is a dead module correct?

I am using REV 2 bios, I dont really want to start messing around with BIOS unless its a sure fix... As for other ram, I dont have access to another brand.

sorry i just glanced at your post and replied, ive just watched the vid,try re-seating the cpu heatsink and the cpu, dont take cpu out just lift up the lever and re apply, then re-seat the heatsink and try with the stick thats faulty,if its still doing it then its the ram module that is bad and will need rma'ing,it will still register in windows even if its bad,ive had the same thing happen to me and i returned the ram for another batch but the same brand and no problems since............the reason for cpu and heatsink re-seat is that the memory controller is inside the cpu and sometimes when you fit the heatsink it can upset the copper traces from cpu to ram slots due to the pressure on the mb

OK, will attempt that. Would it be ok though to just RMA the bad module? I would prefer not to have to send out all 3? G Skill does provide the ability to just send out one. Hopefully it wont be an issue doing so.

yes if they do that, aslong as the module they send you is a good match for the other two as there usually binned together but i think youll be ok

you can run your pc in dual channel while your waiting for rma with the two remaining sticks, manual says first and second white slot for dual channel but i ran mine in second and third,it still saw them as dual channel and 4gb and ran without issues

Yes, currently running in first 2 white slots. Pretty much same performance as before with the 3 dimms in since it wasnt being being recognized anyways. I shipped it out just in time before they closed. Should be there either Thursday or Friday. Their customer support is actually pretty quick/efficient. Hopefully this fixes the issue, and I can enjoy my computer and use my applications I need.

yes you wont notice any difference with 2 sticks, only playing heavy games youll need 6gb,im sure that it will be fine with a new module

I think if one stick always fails to boot fully/properly or acts differently than the other 2, when used alone in any white slot, then it is a faulty module.

It might not be dead, but certainly is faulty.

When you use 6GB are you setting your own QPI/Vtt? If so what are you using
