So your memory is an exact model match to one on the QVL? If so then it should be compatible, so maybe it is either a bit faulty or the CPU has some issue, not sure?

I am not sure about windows 7 and ram usage, you can check though in taskmanager for the memory used in the performance tab, look before you start prime and see how much is in use.

I doubt this is the cause of any issues because prime will only use what is remaining, so if it's a little bit then that is all it will/can use

Just double checked the memory support list from Gigabyte and my memory is listed as verified.

I installed Ubuntu to see if it could be the windows install. A couple of minutes after the install, the screen locked, flashed random colors on the screen, and had to be hard rebooted.

Think I may return the cpu.

Can you test this memory one stick at a time on another setup to be sure it is not the problem before you RMA the CPU?

I only know a few people who have desktops, but all of them were built years ago. Everybody else just has a laptop...usually a mac.

I am certain that the one stick is bad and will RMA the kit. But the one stick seems fine (22 passes - 0 errors)

I was debating whether to wait until I get the RAM back (about 3-4 weeks) and the troubleshoot from there. But if it is the cpu, that is another month that I have an expensive paperweight. If I RMA them both, they should arrive back around the same time.

Ahh well I'd go ahead and RMA the kit again, and maybe think about selling it and buying a new different kit in the meantime.

That way you could see if your CPU is ok or not

    Good point,
If I did get a different kit to test the cpu, when the ocz kit is returned, could I just use both instead of selling it?
Although 8Gb is kind of overkill for a HTPC.

I would not mix kits, it only leads to headaches

Plus I was really suggesting you get a different brand so it wouldn't be best to mix them anyway.

Yeah, I have had enough headaches with this machine.

The RAM was mailed back today and the replacement should be here in about 3 weeks.

Returned items to Intel are tested and if no problems are found, they are simply returned.
This way I will be sure I have a working cpu. The only cost is shipping and weeks without a working computer.

If there is still problems when they come back, I will get new RAM and go from there.
It is probably a bit premature, but do you have any RAM recommendations?

Well I try to steer clear of memory suggestions on the forums publicly because I don't want to appear biased due to my relations with various manufacturers, but check my Sig for my thoughts on memory brands :)

lol, I did notice you seem to have a few brands of choice.
I'll keep you up to date when I get the components back.
Thanks again for your help, you have been exceptional!
