    Default EX58-UD5 and ATI 5850

Hey guys I just got back my xFx ati 5850 back from RMA. They had to replace mine with a refurbished one that was supposed to be tested and working before set out. I am still in contact with xfx support on this but just thought maybe LSD or wazza might have any suggestions. Here is what I did and posted to xfx support.

    To xFx Support.

I just received the new card today. I have built a new system since the first time I had problems with the first card. The new system is a gigabyte ex58-ud5 motherboard and a i7-920 cpu. Everything else is the same. I tried card in this system and it would not post. The debug code that is displayed on motherboard is code 26. (1. If Early_Init_Onboard_Generator is not defined Onboard clock generator intialization. Disable respective clock resource to empty PCI & DIMM slots. 2. Init onboard PWM. 3. Init onboard H/W monitor devices.) If I unplug either or both power cords and try to boot the fan spins full speed vs slow speed (with both power cords plugged into video card) and debug leds will stop at 5D or 75. 5D (1. Initialize Init_Onboard_Super_IO. 2. Initialize Init_Onboard_Audio.) 75 (Detect & install all IDE devices: HDD, LS120, ZIP, CDROM...)

I tried Installing card into second PCI-e slot and same thing. I then tried installing card into original motherboard gigabyte ep45-ud3p and would not post.

I tried putting my nvidia 280 into first slot and the ati 5850 in second slot on the ex58-ud5 and monitor on the 280 both cards power cords were plugged in and I believe it boot but I did not let it go into windows. Right now the card is out of the system. Any other suggestions?

lookslike you tried everything you could,it should work straight away once you plug it into any pci-e slot, maybe they returned the same card???? or that one is faulty too?? does the nvidia card boot up if its installed on its own? ask if you can switch to a sapphire card? or if you like xfx ask them to test it? i have no problems with mine, although the first 5770 card i had was faulty but it would still display desktop ect, just would crash when loading games, this replacement cards been fine

EDIT idk if clearing the cmos or clearing dmi pool data would help + did you boot into safe mode/try to and run driversweeper to remove old nvidia drivers?

what monitor connection are you using on 5850? dvi? vga? or hdmi? try with vga or vga to dvi via adaptor first as hdmi needs drivers

It is defiantly not the same card. The s/n is different. This card has a different cooling system on it compared to the first one. Looks like it would be better then the first one. While I was waiting for the card to arrive I did ask them what kind of card are they sending me and they said a refurb that has been test. I did clear the cmos and stuff different slots. I did uninstall nvidia drivers before removing the nvidia card but did not run driver sweeper as i was gonna do that when i booted back up.

Are xfx and sapphire the same? I forget why i choose the xfx I just want a working card that i paid $309 for ;)

The nvidia card works fine thats what I have been using and still using while waiting on this 5850.

If the system will boot with the 280 in slot 1 with monitor and 5850 in slot 2 think there is anything I could do or check?

xfx are different from sapphire,i just find sapphire to be better quality although ive never used xfx and they might be perfectly fine,if it does boot up with both cards installed take a look in device manager andsee if the 5850 is there then try installing drivers for it and switching diplays from nvidia to the ati card and swap the monitor over, idk if you can do that though as ive never had two different makes of cards installed together but its worth a try, other than that i would say rma it again,it doesnt look very promising if youve tried it in another mb and same results,it should just plug in/boot into windows/download ati drivers/install them/reboot and job done

Well the system would only boot up with just the gtx 280 installed or 280 in slot 1 and 5850 in slot 2. Bios set to pcie-1 and monitor connected to the 280. Windows would see the 5850 but only has a standard vga adapter with a yellow "!" I tried both dvi ports. Looks like its just another dead card. GPUz saw the card but only limited info since no driver installed. Ill just have to wait on xfx to get back to me.

No I did not but when trying to install cat 10.5 it would fail to install driver. If i opened the log it was just say failed to install. Im thinking possibly b/c of nvidia not playing well with ATI or bad card. I did try uninstalling the nvidia drivers when I was messing with it but did not help. Still system should be able to boot with card in. I just don't know enough to know why it hangs at those debug codes. Also why would the fan spin faster when only 1 of 2 power cords plugged in? I just think something is screwy with the card.

Send it back, it's a faulty card!

2b is what you are seeing I bet!

    2b
When the system powers on and the Debug LED shows the usual POST code sequence but hangs on 2b or you get a beep code as soon as the sequence reaches 2b, then the Mainboard cant detect your Videocard properly. Note that the POST code sequence might not halt at 2b but continue, so the final POST Code it displays could be FF, 00 or 7F which means the Maiboard booted, entered BIOS, or OC recovery kicked in and is waiting for Input to enter BIOS. Since the Videocard couldnt be detected properly you will only see a black Monitor and either 2b, FF, 00 or 7F. Check if there is something wrong with the Videocard, the PCIE slot or BUS, the Monitor or monitor cable. Turn the Monitor on and off, switch the Monitor cable from one D-SUB or DVI plug to the other in case your Videocard has two. If this doesnt help then reboot and load the optimized defaults. If that doesnt help either try another Videocard if possible, or try the Videocard in another system to make sure its working properly. Try another monitor or try the Monitor on another System.
