    Question G31M-S2C + Q8400: How far can I OC?

Hello, folks! I have a G31M-S2C mobo paired with an Intel E5200 that run stably @ 3.5Ghz (see sig for rig details).

I was offered to swap my CPU for a Q8400 (quad core, 4MB L2 cache, 2.66Ghz stock, 6-8 multiplier).

I game a lot but notice that some of the new games prefer tri or quad cores (BF2, GTAIV, etc.).

The Q8400 is a great OCer if paired with a great chipset. I'm just concerned that with my G31 mobo, I can only OC so much (may not even hit 3 Ghz).

So its like: is 2MB L2 cache 3.5Ghz dual core better than 4MB L2 cache 2.8Ghz quad core? How far can I OC a Q8400 on my G31 mobo?

    Thanks for any info!

You will have to push it and see, maybe 375-400 FSB if you do it right, so 3-3.2Ghz may be possible.

How much PCIE freq can your graphics cards handle?

If you set 120Mhz pcie now, you'll see some devices: sound, lan, graphics and hard disks dissapear from the system, some of them forever. everything has it's limits. If no problems are visible, then 400 Fsb can be set later on with the quad. with 133 Pcie you can 440FSb. etc, every 3 Mhz on PCie give you 10Mhz fsb. That can be optimised to 130 Mhz. the lower it manages to boot the system the better.

My graphics card drops to 1x Pcie Link between G31 and GFx if clock > 145 Mhz Pcie, visible by GPU-z tool. so if it works doesn't mean it is fast. it is likely bottlenecked.

As far as I know, Sata disks drop at 112Mhz.

It embarrasses me to admit this but I haven't really touched my PCIe settings since I started mildly OCng last year. In my BIOS, its always set to Auto.

Reading that PCIe clock can permanently damage some of my hardwares maks me think a bit nervous to do so. What's the safe zone for this, 110Mhz and below?

Yeah, most likely not with my G31 chip. I guess I'll have to save up for a used P45

It all depends on the devices as to when they will fail to register or fail to function properly, you would be better off with a P35 or P45 based board if you really want to overclock.

If you can't afford a P45 see if you can find a used P35 on ebay or a forum where items are sold

There's an affordable brand new P45 mobo (Emaxx brand) but I'm wary of its quality. There's a used Gigabyte P35 that seems insteresting. Just have to check its quality first...

    Here's the link to a local forum I shop for used items. It's a Gigabyte P35 DS4 Rev 2.0, around US$60+.

    TipidPC.com | Gigabyte P35 Mobo

I've been reading the NewEgg review and it seems there are SATA related problems. I'm not sure also if this has been OCd heavily by the owner
