I try to hold off as long as I can before upgrading. my last pc lasted for 6 years using a Pent. 4 socket 478 w/geforce 7800 (agp)
My upgrade wasn't much of an upgrade I kind of went cheap, and now I'm wishing I didn't since I wrote off. I purchased all of these Items from newegg in Jan of 2010
    Ga-ep45-ud3r 119.99
    antec 900 case 99.99
    radeon 4879 169.99
    intel quad q8400 169.99
    antec 650 truepower 94.95
    zalman 9500 39.98
    SB X-FI Titanium 99.99
    corsair dominator 4 gb 97.99
    win 7 pro 99.99
    WD blue 640 69.99
total 1062.85 not including rebates somewhere totaling 100.00
not bad considering I had to do a total upgrade. i suppose I could of use my old tower, but with all these new goodies, why? and like I said I wrote of the purchase, thx uncle Sam.

I kept my two 22 inch widescreen monitors, my two 160 GB WD 7200 Sata II drives in RAID 0, mouse, speakers, and my case.
    I upgraded from a Q6600, 4 GB DDR2 800 RAM, 8600 GT.

    Date of build: July, 2010

    1) $194.99 - Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz
    2) $119.99 - GIGABYTE GA-P55-USB3
    3) $64.99 - OCZ Fatal1ty OCZ550FTY 550W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V SLI Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply
    4) $134.99 - EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
    5) $104.99 - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM
    6) $28.69 - Scythe SCKTN-3000 92mm Sleeve "KATANA3" 3Heat Pipes CPU Cooler
    7) $69.99 - Western Digital Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
    8) $20 - Logitech Keyboard

Total of $738.63, minus instant discounts/promos of $69.99, plus $2.99 shipping total (most of the items I purchased were free shipping), minus potential rebates of $50
    All parts are from newegg.com

Grand Total cost for upgrade after rebates: $621.63
Of course, I could sell my old parts, probably for at least $200-300 to be modest.
