    Default P55A UD3 SATA problem

    New install of p55a ud3 +cpu memory.
    Updated bios tp F9.
Bios set to ahci, turbo usb 3 disabled, gsata disabled. Hard drives in sata 0,1,2 and dvdrw in sata 5
All booted ok and proceed to install Windows 7 64 bit.

Windows up and running ok but system seems sluggish, delay when opening programs and also when installing programs, transfer files from disk to disk takes ages.
    No event log errors.
Run windows memory test and get no faults.

Then decided to check device manager to see if there are any pointers there and find that sata channel 0 and 1 are running at Multi-Word DMA 2 whilst channel 2 is Ultra DMA Mode 6.

Removed drives in device manager and shutdown pc, then unplugged all drives and just plugged boot drive into sata 0, rebooted and checked device manager and drive showed as Ultra DMA Mode 6.

Shutdown again and plugged second drive into sata 1, after reboot both channels showed as Multi-Word DMA 2 again.

Shutdown pc, unplugged both drives and plugged them into sata 3 & 4, rebooted and drives showed as Ultra DMA Mode 6.

Now using sata 3,4,5 for hard drives with dvd rw in sata 2 and system runs ok, file transfer is back to expected speeds and programs open and install ok.

Any idea what is the problem or is this just a faulty motherboard.

    Appreciate any help/info on this.

Did you enable Native Mode 0-3? If so try with it disabled, enabled should be best though

Also, you are setting AHCI at the top of the page right? Just checking to be sure

Write back cache enabled on the problem drives in device manager?

    ahci enabled
native mode enabled, no point in legacy mode with ahci.
    Write cache enabled.
The problem lies with sata 0 & 1.
When using sata 3,4,5 there is no problem, as previously stated.

I was just checking to be sure, thanks for clarifying!

So do you have a problem with SATA 0 + 1 with nothing else connected? How about if you put your DVD Drive on the Gsata/J.Micron ports, then put 3 hard drives on 0-3?

Thanks for the input on this but i have decided to rma the board as i can find no way to get a stable system with it.
I will look for an alternative to this board, one that is more stable.
Been running p35 ds4 for ages and that never misses a beat, seems qc is lacking with some of the new boards.
    Thanks again.

Sorry to hear, wish we could have been more help!

Maybe the board itself was just faulty, I haven't seen any others with this board having these issues, so that might just be the problem (Faulty board)

It turns out that the motherboard was faulty, bought different motherboard (intel) and all installed and up and running ok.

Did they test the board and tell you that, or did you just mean you think it might be because your new one works fine?

    What board did you get?

I have the same problem that TAW had. System is very sluggish, in fact much slower than my old system I replaced. Can you tell me step-by-step how to check the DMA mode of my drives? I looked in Device Manager and cannot find what DMA mode they are operating at. My boot drive is in SATA-0, I have not plugged my drives into different SATA sockets as TAW did.

Is this a known problem with this board? Do I need to have it replaced under RMA?

Also, I have 6GB of RAM installed but the BIOS and Win 7 only recognize 4GB, anyone know of issues with this?

I greatly appreciate any help or info, Thanks

you need to test you ram sticks one at a time in each white slot one at a time,it should boot with one stick from any white slot if alls well, also carefully check your cpu socket for any even slightly bent cpu pins as this will cause memory problems and missing ram
