I have a WD black 1TB without issues, but it is a storage drive.

Is there a BIOS update for the GFX Cards?

When I looked on the site a few days ago, there was no bios update for the cards.

I also came to the conclusion that its not the disk, the Seagate sata drive exhibited the same symptom.

I have since changed the mobo with another one and have setup the os to restart 5 seconds after starting, So I should know in an hour or two if the problem persists with another motherboard. :)

    --

I should mention, for the new mobo, Im testing it with one card, one piece of ram, clearing cmos before powering on, then loading optomised defaults, saving, rebooting, then going in and setting the ahci and checking the voltages out.

After 5 restarts, the symptom persisted with the different motherboards.
The only remaining parts for the system that have not beein swapped with different parts to test is the CPU and the case fans/buttons/usb.

I've now unplugged the usb/power/fans so really the only untested hardware is the processor, and I can't believe that this 930 is at fault, if the system has the problem again since unplugging the front i/o, then aside from trying another CPU all that im left to believe is that there is a hardware incompatibility with these parts and it cannot be resolved by me immediately. :/

oh man, if it turns out to be the casefans or something, I'll be a bit cheesed lol.

Looks like i'll have to give my vendor a call and arrange a different brand of hardware if changing the i/o and cpu doesn't fix it.

How is this "Restart in 5 seconds" helping you diagnose anything?

Have you tested with an ATI Card? You should :)

the hard lockup restart seems to specifically occur around the point where the windows log on is loading the user account. This is why I'm using reboots (os commanded) to test the problem, and the batch has just made my job a lot more efficient.

its basically does a shutdown /r /t 5 in the startup folder, and I added a shutdown -a shortcut on the desktop, this way, each time I change hardware, power it back on, set the bios (if needed) and let it boot up, I know it will either hard lockup if the problem still occurs or it will just cycle endlessly if the problem is resolved.

    update!
With no front i/o or usb or case fans attached, 1 piece of ram, 1 gtx 465, new mobo, new ram, new graphics card, psu ruled out, chassis ruled out, hdds ruled out, os ruled out, problem persists.

just wow, I never expected this to be so hard to find the culprit, I'll install an ATi card and allow it to cycle for a while, everything has been changed aside from the processor thus far, only some parts are still of the same brand like graphics.

If the ati card does the same problem, then i'll have no choice but to try another processor and Ill need to give gigabyte a ring.

Wow, hope you can figure it out as it sounds like you have about tried it all!

Yeah, i hope so too :)

I have put in a 5450 (weak but its all i have at hand) the system didnt want to post up with this installed, but after a few cmos resets i managed to get it to boot up, ive since cleared the cmos again, reconfigured, then uninstalled the nvidia drivers.
I'll load on the CCC from the disc (not taking any chances with say 10.7) and Ill see if this will cure the issue.

If it does, then at least it shows that the cpu is definitely healthy beyond doubt at that it is more a problem with using any gtx465 (bios or driver maybe?). I also have a gigabyte 8500 GT passive PCI-e card in my workstation which im using right now, so I can try that out if need be.

This has been quite a horrible problem I really hope no one else experiences this kind of issues with such high end hardware, it also makes me think that I lucked out for my own hardware since after your advice my own hardware works so flawlessly :D

I will keep the thread informed of my findings.

    So.. :)

I had the system 'restart cycling' for a good 4+ hours using ATi cards.

and definitely no hard lockup occurs!! ^_^ (WOO!!)

    I ran the 5450 and a 5830 I got my hands on.

So bizarrely the issue turns out the actually be incompatibility, I can say for sure that the processor is not the culprit! :D :D

I am quite surprised that theres less people having graphic card problems with the board (maybe my google-fu is not so good)

Also, I tried two other nvidia cards, a 8500gt (the one from my workstation) and a brand new GT210. both would cause the motherboard to switch off immediately after pressing the power button. theres no way to turn on the system with certain nvidia cards. it is the most startling problem how ati cards can work flawlessly yet I havent had a single nvidia card work correctly in this system yet.

I got an unreleased beta bios tonight from gigabyte and will be trying that out tomorrow. (newer than FB16)

although I was told that this bios I will try doesnt address anything specific to graphics cards, its still worth trying to get these two x58a-ud3r's I have working correctly with nvidia graphics cards.

Im so glad you asked me to try ati cards LSD, I always thought it was a problem graphically but was thrown off by the issue still happening when I got a matching model replacement gtx465.

tomorrow should be quite interesting to see if i can get it all sorted out. I'll post my results late tomorrow when I get a chance.

have you tried with the 465's and fully clearing the cmos and re-flashing but disable keep dmi pool data? and downloading driversweeper, booting up in safe mode and fully un-install any ati or nvidia drivers might help, then just to be sure check your program file folders for any left over ati/nvidia folders and delete them, then install any graphic card drivers you need

Nice to see ATI cards have helped you narrow this down!

Be sure you let Gigabyte know of all the Nvidia testing you did, and how the board now works fine with a ATI card but will not with Nvidia

    I dont think you realise.
the cards are new, there are no prints on the contacts.
I clear the cmos and properly configure the bios between each major component change, the Win7 OS is fresh, the drivers are the newest from nvidia, theres no bioses available addressing this problem on this series of board, the 'old cards not powering' symptom occurs on any of the pci-e slots for both motherboards, the ati cards work flawlessly on any of the pci-e slots, the 465's power up and are majorly unstable.

I technically have two of the same system here because I have had to source replacement parts for almost every component whilst I was working out that the root cause of the issue is incompatibility.

thing is, any one of the GIGABYTE GTX465 and a GIGABYTE X58A-UD3R is not going to work properly, the only way this conclusion could not be possible is if I happen to have sourced two bad boards, or two bad ram kits, or 3 bad nvidia cards. I have tried similar to your suggestions warren, however skipping the driver cleaning part since the systems brand new, and instead, trying a whole new os on a different disk brand.

I am in correspondence with the GIGABYTE Australia QFE, and I'm giong to pass my results on what is working for be for both boards and what isn't to him :)
