It depends what the OP is after really. He would definitely get higher raw FPS with another 285, however he'd have to get a new motherboard because the EP45-UD3L is Crossfire only, so no SLI.

CPU and RAM speed effect 3DMark 06 enough for the difference to be down to your CPU. Also worth remembering that the 460 will really start to stretch its legs at higher resolution and detail levels than those used by 3DMark at the default settings. At 1920x1080/1920x1200 or even 1680x1050 with some Anti Aliasing you will really start to see the difference between a 460 and for example a 5770. the 460 has twice the VRAM bandwidth, and will continue to maintain good FPS at a higher level of AA and IQ.

As DX11 takes off, we may see the gap widening even more if Tessellation is ever heavily used. On paper, the 460 has 4 times the raw Tessellation power on paper than a 5830, which should make things interesting. It seems that after the mediocre performance to heat/power ratio of the G100 based 480/470/465, NVidia have finally got the balance and architecture right with the G104.

Vantage would be a slightly tougher test on your system than 06. You should see a GPU score of about 11.5-12.5K with a 5770. Again, the gap would be wider at higher resolutions and with more AA/AF.

Same, All I pay attention to is what's the best price to performance at the time, be it NV or ATI. One thing that never changes though is the brand. I'll be buying Gigabyte cards from now on, for sure.

Yeah two GPU's is out of the question. Plus not sure my PSU could handle two hard hitters.

3Dmark06 I get 17.7k pretty close to what you got, but like you pointed out. CPU plays a large role in that score. Plus its based around DX9. Who uses that now :P

As far as Vantage, my GPU score was around 12,100. So that will be a nice bump as far as DX10 titles go.

I can't argue with the price either. 220 bucks or so.. I paid what? over 300 this time last year for my 285?! ( did I mention my 285 hits 92C playing Crysis LMAO! and I have good air flow too! )

Damn video cards and how fast they get replaced!!!

Default Re: Video card ! Help

Bought BC2 yesterday and have been playing it with all settings maxed apart from Ambient Occlusion and using 4xAA in DX11 (1680x1050).

I must admit that I don't really have an eye for extreme detail but there isn't much difference when going DX11. Frame rate does drop slightly but I'm still averaging over 60FPS with a minimum of maybe 45 in intense scenes. The game engine handles it well though and while I can tell that the frame rate has dropped it's not as bad as in some games.

Note that my card is running at 860MHz core (had to lower it from 900 as it just wasn't stable in some games, yet was in others) and 2200MHz VRAM (1100MHz Base frequency and 4400MHz QDR)

    Edit:
Metro 2033 is quite tough, but as long as you play with Tessellation off and with 2xaa, lower shadow detail etc you will be fine. Tessellation is complex and unfortunately the ATI cards suffer even more when this is enabled. I'll have to look for the benchmark but one I read the other day (comparing GTX 480 and 480 SLI to HD5870 and HD5870 CF) had the single GTX 480 at 2560x1600 pulling 13 FPS at max detail with Tessellation on and the 5870 getting exactly 0 FPS. Only when using CF did the pair of 5870's put in a score of 11 FPS. That's all down to tessellation grunt. Hopefully the HD6000 series refresh will fix that.

Note that with tessiolation off, the 5870 becomes a decent card for the game and theresolution (tho CF is prefered at that eye bleeding res).
