Aye, SLI/Xfire always run hot(ish), especially the top card because it sucks hot air rising from the bottom one.

I do hear that at anything over stock, the 5970 starts to get very warm. This is probably due to the reference cooler more than anything. However, as long as we're talking about using 460's, heat should be relatively low. Mine only idles at 28c and loads in games at 67c. I'd expect idle temp in SLI to be about 38-40 and load temps to be just under 80c, which is cool. My new case has a side fan right over the GPU area, which seems to be helping no end. Old case temps were 33c idle and 78c full load, so a big improvement. Case is nice and solid too and has plenty of places to tidy cables away, unlike the Lian Li which has zero cable management and only an intake and output fan plus the PSU drawing out air too.

Never thought about the i3's as I wasn't sure how GTA4 would respond to Hyper Threading rather than true quad cores... I'll have to try and find out because the price on those is pretty nice.

Definitely plenty of life left in your system yet Triton. You can even try for 4.2-4.4GHz on your CPU as you have plenty of room to add more voltage as long as temps are OK. If it were me I'd grab a 460 and maybe even a 9800GT Green (no PCIE power cable needed on Green versions) and have a play around with PhysX. I like tinkering tho. No real benefit to a dedicated PhysX card until more games use PhysX, but it'd be fun. Couple that with a CPU tweak or two and you have a great system.

Assuming a clock of 800MHz/4400MHz on the GTX 460, you'll see an across the board improvement in FPS over the 285 as well as being able to enjoy the Tessellation goodness of DX11. You can also sell your 280 and use half the cash for a 9800GT or even use the 285 as a PhysX card which would be sweet in Mafia II and Batman Arkham Asylum.

I'm sure there will be a GTX 460 killer in the HD6000 lineup. And hopefully ATI will really work on the weak tessellation performance of the 5000 series. Then NVidia won't be able to use that annoying "DX11 done right" tag line.

Always been an ATI/AMD fan but I'm also realistic. Unfortunately Intel and NVidia both have the edge atm with the core i series and the 460 respectively. I'd dearly love a system with an AMD 6 core CPU and Crossfire GPU's but the CPU's are still based on the aging AMD64 architecture. Great value for money in a budget system but no serious performance unfortunately.

    Attachment 2831Info so far:
futuremark 3d 06 cant get off like 19k+ the main reason is the cpu tests.
It drags the whole performance to an average.
gpu tests solely like canyon 200fps never seen that before.
3dmark03 about 65k,huge increases in gpu tests ,like over double, but once again the cpu tests drag it down.
    3dVantage np at like 1.0v 850mhz gpu/1100mhz,4400mhz mem.
score ,it wont show cos Im on the basic edition.Jane Asher jiggles well tho.

    heaven uniigne 1100 score ,44fps dx11

All the above are with 1.000V to GPU

850mhz gpu and 4400mhz mem needs 1.025V for a stable heat test for me tho.
For 800mhz and 4000mhz the "standard" .987V is fine.

Even at that "heaven " shows over 40fps average.

Was that with tessellation on or off? A 460 will destroy even a 5850 when tessellation is set to normal or high. However with tessellation off, the ATI cards do really well!

Yep, that sounds about right. The 5770 is supremely clockable, which gives it a huge advantage over a 5770 when in Crossfire. thank god it clocks well though or it would be a bit different.

Can't wait till I have enough money for my i5/i7 build. I'm going to get another Gigabyte GTX 460 to run SLI or PhysX depending on the game I'm playing. Apparently two 460's beat a 5970 or two 5870's in crossfire, especially when they're both OC'd by 200MHz on the core 800MHz QDR on the VRAM. Gotta hand it to NVidia, they finally got Fermi right with this card. This is a lot for me to admit, because I really am an ATI fan. Had lots of ATI cards from a 9800 to a X800 GT, a X1800XT and two HD4850's. I did have a MSI 7900GTO that I unlocked to a GTX, which was a bit of a beast, OC'd to 725 core (from 650) and 1800 RAM. The GTO version ran at 600MHz and 1200 MHz on the RAM, but they were all fully functioning GTX's that they couldn't sell to they crippled them to not undermine the GTX then lowered the price.

That 7900GTX really served me well. Just a shame that NVidia very rarely come up with a card that's cheap AND powerful. That's usually always ATI's job. Not THE fastest cards ever compared, but so much bang for your buck that it more than makes up for it. 4850's lasted me 1.5 years and if I never received a employment compensation settlement I'd still be running them now :) Clocked at 720 Core and 2100 RAM they still eat any modern game up at 1680x1050 and lower with sensable AA levels, everything else at max. Only time they struggled was in Crysis. Couldn't enable AA as there wasn't enough VRAM or bandwidth to cope. Had to mix medium and high settings too. To be honest, my 460 actually performs worse than XFire 4850's in some less complex games, but minimum FPS and smoothness is MUCH improved on the 460. Crysis is really playable on all max settings with a few .cfg tweaks and 4x AA @ 1680x1050.

Only problem with comparing Vantage/3DMark results is that ATI and NVidia really go out of their way to optimize their drivers for it, making it even more synthetic than it already is, unfortunately. As kick said though, the t1tties make up for that. Jiggle jiggle.
