Default Can't get Intel SATA driver to work

My install is using the MS drivers and they don't seem do everything right. I am trying to install the Intel Rapid Storage driver. Whenever I update to this driver, it just goes into a continuous reboot in windows start up. Is this the correct and only driver I need to load in association with the main Intel SATA controller on a GA-P55A-UD7? I have updated the Intel inf and most of the other firmware. All firmware is from this forum's latest drivers list. The other two driver sets related to this controller on this forum seem to be the two previous names for IRS and should not be part of this. Right?

Unless you have some drives setup in RAID or a SSD, you don't need the Rapid Storage Technology driver.

The Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility is what you need for motherboard (ex: chipset) drivers.

    1+ ^^

And if you are not in RAID you cannot install the Rapid Storage program either.

If you want to use Intel AHCI drivers you need to make some changes in the registry before you install the drivers, if you are using windows Vista or 7 (XP is not as easy).

Did you install in IDE mode and are now trying to use AHCI mode? If so, and you are using windows 7 or vista, make the following registry changes then reboot and set BIOS to AHCI.

Enable switching between all IDE/AHCI/RAID modes by changing "Start" Values in these keys to 0
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci\Start
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Pciide\Start
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStorV\Start
Then reboot to windows and then you can update the drivers to Intel ones.

I believe the rapid storage installer includes the Intel i.inf, their manager, and the drivers. It appears to install correctly, but after rebooting never comes back to the OS. It starts the OS and then just reboots.

Win7 was installed with the BIOS set to ACHI for all SATA drives.

The Win drivers do not seem to be seeing removable drives plugged into that SATA controller.

I ran regedit. Initially iAstor was 3 the rest 0. Changed them to 0, rebooted, installed RST again. Rebooted, same problem. OS starts and I am back to cold boot starting.

I did a recovery to the point before this experiment. Scanned for affected files and it said it was removing ctl center 1.2.1.1007, RST 9.6.4.1002, Intel HDC 9.6.4.1002. Restoring HDC 7.0.0.1013.

Registry contents are of course also restored to old values. Essentially it seems to be installing the Intel stuff - it just does not work.

You are correct, as does the INF Installer, it also contains all the AHCI/RAID Drivers as well.

If you are making the above changes in the registry, and then rebooting and setting the BIOS to AHCI, and then booting to windows and it fails to load (BSOD 07b likely), then you may not be editing the correct registry keys.

Are you sure you are editing the correct keys? It's easy to mix up current control set and one of the other control sets, so check again to be sure it's the correct keys you are changing

To the best of my recollection it has never had the BIOS (for this install) in anything but AHCI. Not AHCI/RAID, but AHCI. SO I edited the registers and rebooted. Should I set the BIOS to IDE and then do this whole process. I don't get a 7b after loading the new Intel update. It just goes to a reboot. What values should be in those registry items when it is functioning properly on AHCI?

    They should all be zero.

Does it work fine without this new Intel update you mention? I haven't updated Intel stuff on my end for a while, so maybe there is some new update like you are mentioning that is casing this to fail for you? I'm using 9.6.0.1014 with these edits, and no issues.

Don't install any Intel drivers, then do the switch, then install them.

It is the Intel Rapid Storage file from this website.

I have each time returned to the MS driver for disk, did the registry edit, reboot, installed the Intel RS file from here, reboot. System fails on the reboot by simply booting again until it gets to the to the screen where MS offers to repair. I have tried normal boot at this point, but it simply does the same thing. Win starts to load and then reboots.

Well I am not sure what is causing your issue, I have never seen this cause problems or take so long to change over.

Maybe it would be best, and easier if you just did a clean install if you need AHCI to work.

Hey, you do have your OS drive on SATAII_0 correct?
