Ok - two last questions. If I leave it on IDE will my Windows 7 (which does boot from a sata drive and was installed with ahci enabled) be affected at all?

And second, if I buy a sata hdd for xp at some point, would I need to make a floppy with sata drivers for reinstalling xp (my install disc only has sp1)?

Honestly the only reason I'm even using AHCI was because I was going to try to install osx at some point down the road and I read you needed to use that setting for it to work.

Yes, windows 7 will fail to boot unless you either make some registry changes, or set the BIOS back to AHCI when you are done with XP. I suggest the later, as enabling IDE mode for windows 7 would hinder performance.

If you do get a SATA hard drive for XP, you only need to load a driver via F6 if you want to install in AHCI mode.

Ok, great thanks! What driver would I load exactly? I found a sata/raid driver on the gigabyte website, I'm guessing the one on this page? GA-EX58-UD5 (rev. 1.0) - GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - Driver

If you want to use a SATA Drive for XP in AHCI mode, you would use the Pre-Install Intel RAID/AHCI driver from here (Per your OS x86/x64)
