Default [SOLVED] EX58-UD4P not finding OS hard drive when ACHI is enabled

    Hello,

I've been trying to figure out why my board a GA-EX58-UD4P board will not recongize my OS hard drive when booting up when I have the intel SATA/RAID ACHI mode enabled. Hopefully, I can explain what is going on.

I have 2 Western Digital WD1001FALS 1TB hard drives both are connected in the 0 and 1 Intel SATA slots. The 0 slot is the HD that contains the operating system and 1 contains the extra HD for files. But the motherboard will not discover the OS hard drive. I have tried all the SATA ports 0-5 and have both disabled and enabled SATA native mode. I can remove the OS hard drive and the motherboard recognizes the second hard drive without problems in any of the SATA slots. However, when I plug the OS hard drive, the motherboard locks up during on the Intel screen when the board is discovering the hard drives, this happens when the hard drive is connected to any of the SATA ports. Initially, I thought it was a faulty hard drive so I RMA'd the drive and got a different one, but the new hard drive is doing the same thing. At first it worked just fine, until the Windows 7 install disk formatted the drive to install the OS. After the initial copying of files that installing Windows 7 does, the hard drive wouldn't be discovered and the boar would not boot. I've also tried differnt SATA cables, but that did not make a difference.

I am using the F14i bios and have tried various bios revisions. I can get the motherboard to recognize the hard drive correctly if I disable SATA/ACHI mode, but I have hard drives that I would like to connect externally while the OS is running without having to reboot. Therefore having SATA/ACHI enabled and working is a necessity for me.

I'm at a loss as how to fix this and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction to get this fixed. Hopefully, this is enough information, but if not I can add more. :)

    Thank you for the help.

have you re-formatted that hdd in ntfs? just install your os hdd and install win7 to it,plug your storage hdd in later once its setup, set ahci in the bios theres two options one at top and second at bottom of one of the bios pages, select ahci for both and disable floppy drives from the boot order and drive A and then try installing

Thank you for the reply. Yes the hard drive is formatted in ntfs, both before the installation and as one of the setup options. Since I don't use a floppy drive that is the first thing that is disabled. Also both options for ACHI in the bios were tried enabled and disabled, meaning that I left the ACHI enabled on the top one (Intel) and then tried enabling and disable the bottom one (jmicron?). Both times it wouldn't recognize the OS hard drive.

In the end I think I've tried every possible scenerio. I've cleared the CMOS (30 minute battery removal), flipped every possible switch, but I still can't get it work right. It's weird. I really don't want to RMA the board, because I think this is something that can hopefully be fixed.

    Thank you for the help.

tried the other drive on another pc? just to see if it shows up? do you know if you can update the firmware for those drives? is one firmware newer than the other one? should tell you if you can get it to show up and click on properties

If you want to use AHCI you must have that set before installing windows.

When you have both drives connected to blue ports (intel) with AHCI enabled on boot up before Windows or before booting from the cd you should see something like this in pic 2

If you see both hdds in that screen all is good install windows 7.

yes what ace says,it flashes up pretty quick,i would just plug one hdd in and install win7 then plug second drive in after, sometimes win7 will install on the drive you dont want it to,you could try to pre-install ahci drivers using f6 and usb stick, maybe its not installing the most upto date ones idk

I have that screen that you are describing when I set the SATA/ACHI to enabled, but the bios locks up at the point of discovering the first hard drive (the OS hard drive). When I disconnect that hard drive from the motherboard the lockup does not occur and the process of bios initialization occurs normally. I have tried the problematic hard drive in another computer (ASUS motherboard) and it works or at least the other motherboard recognizes the hard drive.

As far as I can tell the drive does not have a firmware update or a way to update the firmware.

I'm beginning to wonder if there is a difference in the way the hard drive is formatted during install of Windows 7, but I wouldn't think that would be case. The funny thing is that the motherboard worked just fine for about a year, until I reformatted the drive and tried to install Windows 7 again.

Weirdness, but thank you all for the help thus far.

Is there any jumpers on the drive? If so remove them.

It shouldn't matter what format the drive is in or that windows is installed at the point its locking up.

Both drives are the same make and model? 1 of the drives will lock up when Ahci is enabled but works fine on another motherboard with ahci is enabled? The other drive by its self works fine when ahci is enabled?

How about enabled Raid on the intel controller. It would be the first one that appear in the bios.

See if it detects the 1 drive AHCI rom detects the drives still sorta before the raid rom kicks in.

Thanks. I do not have any jumpers on the drives. The drive with the OS, when connected in SATA/ACHI is "ENABLED" or "RAID" will cause the motherboard to lockup. If I remove that drive and leave the other drive connected the motherboard posts just fine.

I have tried the OS hard drive in all the other SATA ports and with different cables the result is the same the bios locks up at the Intel ACHI screen and will not progess futher. I've tried increasing the delay for finding drives but that doesn't work. The other drive will work on another motherboard when ACHI is enabled. This is just baffling, and thanks for the help.
