    Unhappy [Solved][GA-EP31-DS3L][Rev. 1.0] Dead SATA controller ?

    Hi !

I started my computer today, and i got a "boot failure, insert system disk...".

So i looked into BIOS, and i can't see any of my 2 SATA drives, only my IDE DVD burner

    I already tried this :

-clearing CMOS, with default settings loading
    -swapping SATA ports
    -disabling/re enabling the SATA controller
-removing all peripherals, apart video card
-booted from USB live and CD live : all works, apart SATA of course

My HDs are spining right, so i think my SATA controller is dead...

    Another idea ?

    Thanks

Did you move your hard drive to the top of the "Hard Disk Boot Priority" section, in the Advanced BIOS page?

If you are using AHCI or RAID your disks will not be visible in Standard CMOS page, this is normal.

If you already checked there and do not see your disks, can you please reflash the Latest BIOS using Qflash, and before the flash disable "Keep DMI Data" in Qflash.

Please DO NOT USE @BIOS, here is a Qflash guide

I did not tried to change boot priority, because i don't see any disk ;)
So there is nothing to boot from ;)

I don't use AHCI or RAID.
I remember seeing my hard drives in the BIOS before...

I didn't tested BIOS flashing for now.

I will try those two things and report in this post.

    Thanks !

    Edit : done

Flashed last beta .f5f (very stable) without "keep DMI", loaded optimized default

Nothing changed : i can boot my SLAX USB without any trouble but i can't even enter BIOS when any SATA drive is plugged.
Every time i want to modify BIOS, i need to power off, unplug HD, restart, modify BIOS, power off, plug HD...and restart

If not, the HD light is strucked and BIOS freeze.
And when i press Del to enter BIOS, it still freezed on "preparing to enter BIOS..." or something like this

My Motherboard is going to RMA next week...if i can get free shipping because it is the price of a second hand mobo (holland, from france).

    Thanks again ;)

Without keep DMI? Do you mean you disabled it, if not I meant you need to disable "Keep DMI Data" before you flash.

Did you test the drive on another board and it's ok? Did you test it fully with the drive manufacturer tools?

I ask because that is the only time I have seen behavior like this, with a dead/dying hard drive.

    I disabled it

I can't test them with any tool, because PC freeze.

So i bought an external SATA box, to test them (will be here this week).

But i really think SATA controller on mobo is dead...

So you only have one system then?

If so that isn't good, you need to find a friends PC or somewhere you can go and connect these drives and test them. External box will only fail as well if the drives are faulty.

I would test them on another board for sure before deciding something is wrong with this motherboard, that is the exact thing that happens with dead hard drives to any board, so it would be best to test on another setup for sure!

    You were right...

One HD is a boot of death SEAGATE 7200.11 :

The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs - MSFN Forums

But as i can't update the firmware (PC can't boot), i got to send it back to SEAGATE...

I never thought something like HD firmware bug could happen...and lock the BIOS

    Thanks for your help !

This issue is solved and thanks to Gigabyte making better products than SEAGATE

Nice to see you found the problem, sorry it was a faulty drive though!

I knew it sounded like that was the issue though. How did you test to be sure?

I simply used my external enclosure.
Same symptoms : LED stuck, no access, spinning right, heads moving right at startup.

I already flashed the last firmware on the other same Seagate HD, to protect it.

And i bought an USB to TTL interface from asia, to "unbrick" the culprit one

I will post about "unbricking" in 2-3 weeks (time to get interface from asia).

My computer is back with two new HD : Hitachi for backup in enclosure and Western Digital for system

I'm really sure it is not the motherboard now

Thanks again and wait for the "unbricking" result

Well I'm glad you easily found it instead of trying things for several more days without luck, I knew it sounded like a bad drive.

Good luck with the unbricking, I look forward to hearing your results!
