    Default P55A-UD6 and i7875k

The price of the GA-P55A-UD6 at Newegg is now $210, and with a $30 MIR it's now $180. I'm looking at this board to host an i7 875k. I have some questions:

Now that we're up to BIOS F13, can this board manipulate the Turbo Boost the way Asus boards can?

I love Lsdmeasap's results with this board - very high BCLK's. Is that because of the 24-phase VRM?

The one concern I have is that big heatsink between the cpu socket and the PCIE sockets. I am using a Noctua NH-D14. Will that mid-board heatsink interfere with the D14? Otherwise I can just get another P55A-UD3P.

it wont let you adjust the turbo boost like asus,as for the other things i cant say,i dont think it would foul any heatsinks on the mb but it might block the first blue ram slot from the cpu socket

I already have the D14 on a P55A-UD3P. The D14 is fine with my Ripjaws memory. It's just the potential interference with the mid-board heatsink that I worried about.

yh well i cant really comment on that, maybe someone will who knows more but i do know that gigabyte bios's wont let you adjust the turbo boost like asus does,i dont know if gigabyte will include it in future bios's as i cant see why it cant be implemented

    Great finds! Thank you.

OK, it fits. So do I stay with Gigabyte and their top-notch OC capacity, or go with Asus and the flexible Turbo Boost?

    Arrgghh!

its up to you really and what each mb has to offer regarding sata ports and features, turbo boost isnt needed much anyway if your overclocking, you can achieve what turbo boost does by simply raising the bclk, the power saving features will underclock/overclock the cpu just the same as turbo so its not essential

go for the cheapest board that has the most features and options, the rest can be made up by overclocking

I agree. If over clocking, Turbo Boost is pretty redundant, no matter how you can configure it. The only reason I'd ever even enable it is if it were required to be able to use a selectable turbo multi on a locked CPU.

To be honest, IMO even using a K series CPU is a bit pointless. You'll get better performance using a higher Bclk and a lower multi. I'd say the max multi you'll probably be using would be 22 on a 200 Bclk, realistically. You may use 23, but only if you have a golden chip. Having a standard bclk on a high multi will loose you some performance.

But the point of all this is to play around, see what is possible.

I have tried to get my system so I can use my 4GHz OC only when necessary. Cranked up my Vtt to 1.33v, ran my BLCK to 191MHz so I could drop my multi to 21x and disable TB. OK, so now I could enable EIST so the cpu speed and voltage would drop down when the system was at idle. Nope. No drop. So disappointing.

I've seen people do stuff like 30x133 to get 4GHz in Turbo Boost. That would be fun. Heck, a TB of +9 on all four cores would be fun, and allow the rig to go from 2.8 to 4GHz when needed.

I wish the Gigabyte engineers would put something like that in the -UD6's BIOS. Hmm. Why not in the UD3P's BIOS?

the cpu wont throttle when its set to any voltage setting apart from auto which isnt advised or normal, then the cpu will throttle at idle if c-states are enabled, you can then add extra voltage only at load through dvid + to reach 4ghz stable,im clocked at 4.2ghz that way,ive set cpu voltage to normal so it throttles when its idling and added an extra 0.0750v at load making 1.23v total
