heh-heh. This is good to know. I am going to see if I can raise BCLK without raising VDIMM and QPI/VTT for a higher overclock. :)

    Hello, Psycho101.

You give good advice...which I have had to learn the hard way. :D

I am going to try to overclock and tighten now somewhat without changing my QPI/VTT and VDIMM at 1.64. But it looks good so far. :)

--"You can safely take your vtt/qpi to 1.35 see if that helps with dram voltage."

My motherboard is X58A-UD3R rev. 2.0. As of BIOS rev.FB, I am unable to use QPI/VTT V of 1.35. The BIOS increases V by increments of 0.02 and the hundredths digits are all even. In other words, I can use 1.34V or 1.36V, but not 1.35V.

We live in an arbitrary Gigabyte world. :p

    Hello, wazza300.

Would you suggest I enable EIST?

    Ok, new problem.

What does a stable overclock mean?

After I passed 20 runs on IBT set to maximum, I tried to install W7. I kept getting an error that says that I may have a bad ram stick (I don't) or that I have a bad sector (I don't). Other times, the system would act as if my installation disc was missing some files (not true). So, I tried to install Vista instead. But this time, I started getting a friendly BSOD notice that said that there is a "page fault in a non-paged area." I believe this is true--but not because of a hardware issue.

    Ok.

My immediate suspicion was that the overclock was barring my system from installing Windows properly. And this turned out to be the case. I successfully reinstalled Windows after I reset my BIOS.

So, the question is, what does it mean to have a stable overclock? Or better yet, what's the point of a stable overclock if all it does is lead to a faulty memory system?

Actually, I have an intuition about what my problem may be. I wonder if my overclocking or altering V values have somehow affected the frequency governing SATA, USB, and other ports. How do you think I can isolate these frequencies and keep them normal? Perhaps, I should keep PCI-E V or IOH V at default values, whatever they may be?

    What do you guys think?

did you install win7? only things i change in bios are to disable all floppy drives and drive A,set cpu/qpi-vtt/dram/dvid to 0.0750 and uncore freqto 21x,set all memory timings and speeds and bclk, everything else i leave on auto ohh and i enable sata port0-3 native mode to enabled

Yes, I was able to install W7 properly without any trouble once I returned my BIOS setting to default frequencies, multipliers, and voltages.

What I would like to attempt is a fresh install of Windows on my supposedly likely fully stable overclock. That would give me the clearest sense that the memory system is indeed fully stable with my overclock.

Or is it an inherently different situation to try to install Windows on a stable but overclocked system?

My concern is, if I am unable to install Windows with my stable overclock, then how can I be certain that I can install any other program, including other operating systems with this overclock? In fact, how can I be certain that doing anything with my overclock will not misuse memory?

How interesting. The folks at the Anandtech forums strongly urge not to install an OS with overclock because doing so will likely introduce data corruption. They strongly recommend overclocking after OS installation.

I suppose I have no choice but to follow their advice.

I have had no problems with installing windows on either of my computers while it was overclocked. I dont read the anadetch forums but as long as your overclock is stable why shouldnt you be able to install windows

    Hello, Acebmxer.

I kind of summarized my experience above at 35.

I was utterly unable to install either Vista or W7 on my overclocked system even though, according to the Intel Burn test set to maximum running for four hours, it was stable. Overclocked, the installation process could not find the correct files on my installation disc, was unable to use system memory properly, and could not properly read or write to hdd.

But when I returned frequencies, multipliers, and voltages to default values, the installation was as smooth as it always was. Perhaps, this is normal. But it does not give me much confidence in stress tests. :p

Well, I am going to test now to see if I can return to my stable overclock, which I like very much, and see if I can install other programs and operate the computer without data corruption.
