If it boots to BIOS or choose XXX then the board is probably ok, did you ever test with different memory?

Could you enter the BIOS at all from the "Choose XXX" screen? How about Qflash from there?

I know you already bought a new board, but just thinking maybe you could salvage this one and sell or use as a backup system.

    Thanks,

Yes it boots to BIOS, and I have loaded optimized and fail safe and can Q Flash and have a few times. I have tried my other systems HDD, GPU, RAM. Pulled the battery. Left the CMOS jumpers on all day. Everything I have read here but try another CPU.

But I'm game if you have other ideas.

The same storm took out one of my on board NIC's on the system in my sig. The bolt hit a tree 50 feet from my house.

Hmm, great you can enter BIOS and still flash. Not sure what else you could try then, sounds like you tried it all.

Did you flash the BIOS? How about update/copy the main BIOS into the backup to see if that helps?

Damn, that is close for lightning, where you guys awake at the time :)

You may be able to RMA the CPU and board if it comes down to it, I surely would try.

    Thanks,

Well the board is naked on the bench so the testing is over for now. What is the warranty on these Gigabyte boards and Intel CPU's? I got it and the Q6600 on 3/10/2008.
Yes I flashed the BIOS, twice to make sure as directed by the good instructions on this forum.
I was almost asleep when it cracked and did come out of the bed. My house has been hit before and you can smell it when it does so I went to sniffing around.
I didn't have any indications of a brownout. All my clocks were still working. No burnt smells.
The PC I am on now lost one of the two on board NIC's. I just swapped the cable. I hear that if I load optimized defaults I may get the NIC back. But............. will this take my RAID settings out if I load optimized. I only have my RAM tweaked to the recommended voltage.

What are the RMA procedures if I am not out of date.

Gigabyte boards have a 3 year warranty, so you board should still for sure be under warranty.

Intel CPU warranty is the same, 3 years.

Wow man, sounds scary! I haven't been scared good like that by lightning since I was much younger.

Ya, sometimes loading optimized, clearing the CMOS, or flashing the BIOS again can recover a lost NIC. Your RAID will be fine, as long as you go directly back into the BIOS after you load optimized again, and then set RAID enabled before you let windows try to load.

Here is how to RMA Gigabyte, usually takes 2-3 weeks to get a board back, sometimes less/more

You'll have to contact support, via chate, email, or phone (And then jump through their troubleshoot tactics, or at least let them know you already thoroughly have and are not a novice). Used Intel Stock Heatsink is also a must

Anything by either Belkin or MasterPlug for surge protectore. They are basically pretty much identical as long as they aren't a cheap generic brand. The most important factor is the guarantee they come with. These are the "Connected Equipment Compensation" ones. If the connected appliance(s) are damaged by a surge (ie the protector fails to protect) then they will give compensati9on to you to the value of £xxx/$xxx. Average is ~£5000 in the UK, not sure about the US or other countries.

Did you have a surge protector on the lightening struck PC? If so and your kit is damaged you should be covered by a similar scheme. Also SOMETIMES your home insurance may cover you. It's well worth asking. I once left a cigarette in an ash tray on an expensive turkish carpet (£450) and it turned out I was covered to get it replaced by my insurance company.... sweet!

    Thanks guys,
I got my hands on an EP45 version of my EP35-DS3R and put the Q6600 off the zapped board and she is a-screamin along.

I like the EP45 version with the 45nm over the 65nm and the two NIC's and the 1394 ports I sure can use for my videos.

Now I need to find two 2GB versions of this RAM = CORSAIR XMS2 DHX 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Memory Model TWIN2X4096-6400C4DHX. Thats what I have in her and need to fill those two slots. Google shows them for more than I paid and they are discontinued! Geesh. Can I mix MFG's?

Nice to hear your CPU is still working fine at least!!

You can mix memory sometimes, but often it does not work or can be a huge hassle getting things stable. Sometimes you can't mix at all though, so you have to be careful what you are trying to mix.

Looks like the model is out of stock at most places, likely discontinued and replaced with different chips and a new model name. Maybe you could find them on ebay, I see 14 auctions, starting at $129 per kit.

Thanks, I started Gigabyte RMA procedures last night. I hope I have success and they replace it, or perhaps with a better board.

    Question,

I fired this thing up with no software install. I have the Chipset driver CD. Should I go through all that? I do notice my on board NIC is running at 100 mbps instead of the usual 1.0 Gbps.

Use the latest chipset drivers from here, everything on the CD would be old
