    Default Re: Incompatability: Corsair XMS3 CMX4GX3M2A1600C7 and P55A UD4?

Didn't have much time recently for testing, I've been busy on Civilization 5.

I did do as I said I'd do though. First I set my 4GHz overclock with an 8x multi for 1550 ish MHz (DDR) with timings of 7-10-8-27 to see if these sticks were tRCD limited and maybe even specc'd wrongly. After leaving the PC off over night, (everything initially tested OK, 10 LinX runs passed) I tested with LinX and got a fail after less than a minute, so not even one complete run.

The next day I tested them at the XMP suggested settings, but set this manually, so Bclk to 160, RAM multi to 10 and CPU multi to 18 for a stock CPU speed of 2.8GHz. Again, everything was fine initially but when turning on the next morning and running Linx, yet again it fails before the first run completes.

I have since been able to run more tests on a borrowed ASUS P7P55D PRO running BIOS 1702 and can confirm that the Corsair RAM works fine at both stock and overclocked speeds. Also worth noting is that the RAM will OC to 211x8 = 1688 and is still stable form a cold boot. this is at the certified 7-8-7 timings too, with the same amount of VTT and VDIMM as on the UD4.

Sadly it seems that there is an issue with PSC RAM and at least the UD4, maybe even a couple of other P55A boards from Gigabyte. At least I know that I can ebay it now and will have to state for safety sake "May have issues on Gigabyte P55A boards" How much that will effect the price I get is unknown...

I've also noted similar cold boot and general instability issues also with 7-8-7-x rated PSC on X58, so they probably need to adjust something in the BIOS for these tighter tRCD rated PSC (tRCD only +1 above CAS) sticks.

I planned to send in some info on this to them as well, just haven't had a chance yet, and I need to let Mushkin know as well in case they don't already.

Just re-read your post LSD. What do you need to tell Mushkin?

It's the Corsair modules that aren't playing nice. The Mushkin were bought by me as a replacement, and are 100% solid and stable, even with tighter timnings than stock AND over clocked to DDR 2060+

I FINALLY got a reply from Gigabyte support, after nearly a week. Here it is:

    Hi,

We don’t have the same module to test on our side.

    We’ve tested CMD4GX3M2B1600C8.

    Memory OC to 1600Mhz.

    CPU: 760 OC to 160*21

Performance mode: Turbo change to Standard

    QPI/Vtt: 1.25V

    Memory voltage:1.66V

There is no instability on our side.

Please check the memory voltage and QPI/ Vtt.

Those will affect stability when OC.
To be honest, they've completely wasted their time trying to test the issue with completely different modules. I doubt the Corsair that they used even contain the new(ish) PSC modules. Also all the data they needed as to what I had tried to bring stability are in this thread, including QPI/VTT and VDIMM.... seems they have issues reading too....

Don't get me wrong, I'm not desperate to get this problem sorted but it would be nice, when I ebay them, to NOT have to say "doesn't work with Gigabyte P55A-UD4 and POTENTIALLY doesn't work with ANY Gigabyte P55 board".

thats a bit comical, testing with a different model of ram,

i cant really find anywhere that sells mushkin ram in the uk either, ive only found aria.co.uk they have a pretty good selection but postage isnt free, cant find any on any other sites,i like the mushkin callisto ssd too, seems to be the same spec as the corsair force60 and the ocz vertex 2e

My thoughts exactly. How can someone with a job in PC tech support not know that RAM IC's used can be completely different depending on model version and sometimes even if the model numbers are identical but the revision numbers differ?

I got my Mushkin from Aria. From what I can see too, they're the only place that sells it. I'm glad I ordered it, it was well worth the 120 and the 6 P&P. I wish I'd got it in the first place and not gone for the Corsair. Seemed a good idea at the time, and if it worked it would have been (1600 DDR would have been plenty). Seems like it's turned into a false economy.

WOW, that is TERRIBLE!! Did you tell them you do not approve and that was a waste of both of you guys time?

I mentioned Mushkin because I have a set of similarly spec'd PSC based modules that exhibit the same horrid behavior.

I've talked with Mushkin and they said they have seen an increase in issue with these type of modules, so I'll be sending in a report shortly and see if I can get them to add BIOS compatibility for these PSC with tRCD +1

I made it clear that testing with those modules was 100% worthless. I did bite my tongue a bit though because if I didn't I can guarentee they'd never reply back...

Didn't know that Mushkin was using PSC. Hopefully it's only the top binned stuff.

Psycho, how far did you push the VTT when running, or not running rather, the Corsair sticks?
