My current temps are more like 40 41 44 41

I checked the qpi/vtt.....it was 1.175.....I changed it to 1.335

Is A-Data known to be crap ram?

Also...every boot I am being told that my second HD needs 'checking'

i dont know about adata, but another person has same problems with corsair so maybe its bios? where are you plugging in hdd's? put os in port0,second hdd in port1 any sata dvd drives in ports 4/5
click in your second hard drive/properties and run chekdisk for any errors
test with 1.35qpi and see if it still does it from cold boot,1.175 isnt enough even at stock clocks

Some more info from my local forums:

I have the same board, rev 2.0, and noticed a bit of weirdness with my setup. However I am running the Geil 1600 @ 1333 and everything works fine.

After reading through the manual, the board doesn't actually support 1600 ram:
    from page 10:

"Support for DDR3 2200/1333/1060/800 MHz memory modules." Try running the ram at a slower speed and see if:
    a) the ram is recognised
    b) the OS stops BSD'ing

Also this board is very picky about the RAM it likes. I have a mate who has built 2 of these machine and has had a lot of trouble with the RAM modules.

I thought maybe that's what the new bios's were doing....making the board support 1600....?

    Some more info:

    GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 1.0) 1600 MHz support? - Gigabyte - Motherboards-Memory

When I tested my ram at optimised in fc2....I think the ram speed was 1333....I had no errors.

Maybe my ram just is incapable of running stably at 1600

Furthermore....my cpu only supports up to 1066

the cpu and mb will support 1600mhz it just needs voltage tweak, thats at stock clocks,i can run my ram at 1800mhz and 1600mhz without problems you just have to raise the qpi voltage

did you load optimized defaults and re-enter all your bios settings?? write them down first and type them in again but try with higher qpi/vtt

Based on the evidence I have to disagree....this board is very particular...even some of the ram in the compatibility list don't work out of spec. Bios flash releases don't always work. This board wasn't made to support 1600 ram. My manual even says as much. I don't want to push it or OC it just to get to 1600 which is apparently not supported anyway.

I'm setting optimised defaults in bios now. I'll write the main values down and tell you.

But my plan is to use optimal settings....get my ram to 1066 or 1333....wait for a cold boot and hope that it boots

if it doesnt support 1600mhz but supports an impossible to run 2200mhz ram then i find it very strange, running ram at lower speed just means you need less qpi voltage so thats the key to running it at 1600mhz,you just havnt found the right amount yet

try it at 1333mhz and i wont be suprised if it works

Ok well I will try that...after I try a cold boot with optimised settings. By the way...these are the default main values for optimised in bios:

    CPU - 2.8 (133x21)
    QPI Clock ratio (auto)
    QPI Link speed 4.8ghz
    Uncore clock ration (auto)
    Uncore freq 2667mhz
    Base Clock control (disabled)
    Bclk freq (133)
    Mem multi SPD (auto)
    Memory 1066
    QPI/vtt - 1.175
    CPU vcore - 1.24375v
    Dram volt - 1.500v

I'll try to cold boot with these settings in a couple of hours. If it cold boots and all seems ok...then I'll settle for these settings

If it still spits at me I'll try to fiddle with the qpi/vtt as you say.

Can I ask you...if I fiddle with qpi/vtt...............do I fiddle with any other values too......or just that value?

you should just set dram to 1.66
type in mem timings for all 3 channels and set speed using 8x/10x/12x ect to give 1600mhz
    set qpi/vtt voltage yourself
set uncore freq to twice your memory multiplier then add one to it so an 8x mem multi will be 17x uncore and so on

That sounds hard....sounds like trial and error (about setting timings I mean) in the past I set timings by entering numbers... like 9 9 9 24

Anyway....I'll try my things first with the optimised defaults....if it doesn't cold boot... (or even if it does cold boot) I'll try your idea.

    thanks a lot

ps...earlier you said 'try it at 1333 and I wont be surprised if it works'...then in your next post you said to try to set it for 1600.....so which one should I do?
