So all these BSOD and chaos isn't the end of the world (unless I manage to brick my mobo or ram)....it's just a matter of getting the settings right?

you wont brick your mb,only by flashing the bios with @bios and it go wrong, always use q-flash to update the bios with,if it crashes from a bad oc setting and wont start then you have to clear the cmos by removing the mb battery and start again

and yh you just need to find a stable voltage,if you cant get it stable with any amount of voltage then i would think about exchanging the ram

correct depending on the BSOD.... If it is a memory one enough of them could corrupt some windows files and may need to reformat and reinstalll windows but other then that its not the end of the world.

I'm going to go back to FB bios...the last official bios...set to default and try the adjustements to get the ram to run at 1600.

In no way do I want to OC the machine....I just want the ram to run at spec.

I aim to use the PC as a recording studio...using Cakewalk Sonar...recording audio, mixing audio...that kind of thing

thanks again....I'm off to go back to defaults

When you flash bios that makes all values default doesn't it?

Here are some cpuz screens of my PC using FB bios (last known official) freshly flash, no tweaks:

What do you think of these values? Seems ram isn't running at 1600....so what values should I try to change in bios?

yes it will all go back to defaults, then you will need to manually set your memory to 1600Mhz

To set memory at 1600Mhz, if you leave Bclk at 133, set memory multi to x12, then uncore to x24-26. Then set your ram voltage to the spec amount (Generally 1.65V), and you will need to find your CPU's own stable QPI/Vtt, try 1.25-1.35 (Maybe more/less, depending on timings used). You will also need to set your own MAIN timings and Command Rate to the spec of your memory.

Ok...so uncore = x24, 25 or 26? Does it just say 'uncore' in bios? What part of bios?

My ram voltage spec says 1.55-1.75. So I supose 1.65 is the mid figure, that makes sense.

Finding the QPI/vtt setting could take many tries right...it goes up in .01's doesn't it? Not sure...but that sounds like it could take plenty of trips to bios

Where do I find Command Rate? Is that an entry in bios?

Yes, uncore 24-26. 24 would be minimum you can use, 25-26 for added stability and speed if you desire.

It is called uncore in the BIOS.

So your memory is not even for X58? That is probably part of your issues.

Na, QPI increments depends on the CPU, so not sure what you will have but generally it is .1 or .05 increments. You can adjust in windows with easytune testing as you go if you want.

BSOD 0x00000124 means you need more

Command rate is in the memory timings, set manual/expert then set each channel main timings one by one. Main timings are at the top of each channels page, and the command rate is down towards the bottom, 3 up from the bottom I believe.

Ok from default bios settings....to get my ram to run at spec (1600) I changed to these settings in bios:

    memory multi - x12
    uncore - x25
    ram voltage - 1.66
    timings 9 9 9 24/ command rate 1
    qpi/ vtt - 1.315v

    This is my cpuz:

The ram looks like it is running at the right speed now...but the 'Clocks core speed' is 1598.9mhz......shouldn't it be running at 2.8ghz/ 2800mhz?

it will run at 2.8mhz when any load is applied to cpu,its in idle power saving state,to disable it choose high performnace setting in windows Control Panel\System and Security\Power Options, you tested with 1.315v qpi before? you might need even more and if your rams rated at 1.7v maybe more dram voltage?

Right...so the cpu measurement in cpuz shows the current cpu mhz usage? Not what is can do?

Yeah I tested with 1.315v qpi. You think I should bump it higher and higher in tests?

Will I get a crash if it is too high? I guess that's a good way of working out what is too high.

Would you say that things are looking better?

I still have a feeling it will BSOD me on a cold boot
