Well, since there is nothing wrong with FFb I went back to FE and the original ProfJim OC settings. Once again I have learned a few things:

    • FFb is solid it just don't like me!
    • FE is not stable with the Optimized Default settings. Image Burn only ran 1 pass before it failed. Prime95 started only 1 cpu. Is that normal?
    • Put back the 4 GHz OC settings with lots of juice and the system runs Image Burn to completion and Prime95 acts normally!
    • Before you say it, FFb was very very unstable with the OC settings!

I think I'll let it rest for a few months and see what Gigabyte comes up with for a final release, if ever.

    ProfJim,
Once again it was not the slow learner or the instructor that was the problem! I finally got to talk to a technical support person at Gigabyte and explained what was going on and Gigabyte was able to supply me a new/revised BIOS that works. No more Smart Command Error and no more BSOD's. There is something about my configuration E8500/Mushkin 1066 Memory that causes problems - remember all the trial and tribulations trying to OC this thing using FD and then they came out with FE and the problems went away.

I'll run a stress test to make sure it is stable at 4 GHz. But then... I would like to understand why this thing is stable at our 4GHz settings but not stable at the default settings even though I set the voltages manually per your instructions.

    Lsdmeasap,
    ???!

    ProfJim,
Ran IBT for 10 passes successfully several times. Ran Prime95 for 12+ hours with no problems. So...it looks like I'm back to a reasonably stable machine running at 4GHz with BIOS version FE.GA. Hopefully, I can get an answer from Gigabyte Technical Support on just what makes my machine require a "Custom" BIOS. For some reason FE is not on their web site and the Tech Support person kept trying to get me to go back to FD to see if it worked.

Any ideas on why the system is unstable using the (FSB 333) Optimized Defaults (FE and FE.GA) and unstable at FSB 333 with the FSB 422 (4GHz) voltages and all the memory timing stuff left on Auto? Obviously, it must be the memory stuff on Auto? One would think that the memory Optimized Defaults would be OK?!

Glad to hear that your system is "magically" working with the special FE bios that GB gave you.
It sounds like your specific hardware setup has issues that don't affect most systems.
Just as no-one can create bug-free software, it seems that no bios can cover every conceivable hardware setup.

PM Lsdme and see if he will compare your special 45u3p2ga.fe bios with the former FE bios to see what has changed.

Here is a useless and bug free program I created:

    :start
    :hell
    goto hell
    :end

Send $29.95 + $9.95 (shipping and handling) for version 1.01 of my software.

    Hi there!
I have the same problem with Smart error on my GA EP45 UD3P and Corsair P60 SSD. The problem is that I have 1.0 version of the motherboard, and there is no bios FFb on this version. So I can flash the bios, or is not compatible?
The other problem is that, when I install the OS Windows 7 x64 on the SSD(only for OS, no partition), when I connect the other hdd 1T Samsung F3 (with 3 partitions), the first partition of the disk disapear. This happend no matter if I intall the OS with the Samsung hdd connected or not.

Do NOT use the rev.1.6 FFb bios with your motherboard!!
** edit ** Only download and flash using a bios that is for your specific model, otherwise you might "brick" your board.
You might need to contact Gigabyte tech support if you are using the latest bios for your rev 1.0 board.

Which sata ports are you using for each drive?
You OS drive should use the first yellow Sata2_0 connector.
Sata optical drives should use the Sata2_4 or _5 connectors.
Are you using either of the purple GSata2 connectors for your SSD or HDD?

Are you using a dual boot setup with both drives connected?
Have you enabled any options for your HDD using the Samsung software?

Are you using the following bios options?
    Sata Raid/AHCI Mode = Enabled
Sata Port0-3 Native Mode = Enabled

Are you booting with any USB drives connected to your system?

    I will contact Gigabyte Support.
For SSD I use Sata2_0, for storage disk Sata2_1, external (not bootable) hdd Sata2_3, and for optical drive Sata2_5.

I don't use dual boot, and local Sata GSata2 is disabled.
I use AHCI mode and Intel RST drivers.
    I don't use Samsung software.

    Your connections look good.
In the Advanced BIOS Features, what do you have configured for:
    1. Hard Disk Boot Priority
    2. First Boot Device
    3. Second Boot Device
    4. Third Boot Device
    5. HDD SMART Capabiltiy
In the Integrated Peripherals bios setup, what is your setting for Legacy USB Storage Detect?

Are you using stock settings or have you overclocked your system?

We can best help you if you include your full hardware setup in your forum signature.

Hdd priority is first SSD, than Samsung F3.
First boot device is CD/DVD, than hard disk, 3 disabled.
    Hard Smart is disabled.
    Legacy USB is enabled.
Now the sistem is not oveclocked, but I write the setup in the signature.
