Default Bad install of FFb Bios - Smart Error Fix?

I made the mistake of installing the ffb BIOS on the E8500 system. I was getting the "Smart Command Failed" error. I did all the stuff your supposed to do and have done before several times to update the BIOS. However, this time the system became unstable and eventually would not even enter the BIOS setup. I had to disconnect everything except the video card to get back into the BIOS setup and reinstall FE! Just an asside - nothing worked until Gigabyte Tech Support said to try booting with only one stick of memory - that worked - might want to add that to the BIOS recovery instructions?! I'm now back running on FE and everything seems ok. Any ideas on what the heck went wrong with the ffb update? Anybody else try this beta version? I am not sure I'm getting that much real world joy from the SSD boot drive. Although, all the benchmarks I've run say it is great. Other than a few seconds delay on the boot does the Smart Drive Error cause any problems? Having a bad week!!

it shouldnt cause any problems, all smart does is enable native command queing ect and tell you if the disks about to fail, are you running the ssd in ahci mode?

Yeah, I did all the stuff your supposed to do like use AHCI mode and move most everything that get's written to the SSD Drive (My Documents, My Pictures, My Video, Downloads, Windows Logs, etc.,etc.) to a standard HDD. Probably gross overkill - I read too many how to's prior to install the SSD Drive! Now if I could just figure out what went wrong with the BIOS update.

NCQ is a function of Native SATA, not SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology).

You can safely ignore any smart weirdness reported by this slight bug. It won't effect performance.

The problem I had after the machine was unstable for a moment in time was a failure to get back into the BIOS setup screen. The BIOS just hung. Yes, I had the BIOS set for ACHI and yes, I have all the latest Intel drivers and the SSD Drive has the latest firmware. I will NOT flash the Beta BIOS again. I'll wait a few weeks/months and see what Gigabyte comes up with. What kind of surprises me is it seems Gigabyte Technical Support is not real interested in determining what my problems were/are with the Beta release - just it is a Beta so don't use it!

The BIOS mentioned works fine, I've had positive reports and thanks from several users on it already.

Since you can boot with 1GB of memory, sounds like you need some help with your BIOS settings. If you do please give me the full settings you were trying to use in a template from my signature.

Also include a link to your memory, and let me know which system it is you are using in your sig (If it is one of those).

Good to hear that I am the only one having problems with this BIOS. Attached is the settings I have had this machine set at for many months - except I went from "Raid" to "AHCI". The system ran Prime 95 for 16 hours so it is relatively stable. Should I back it off to more normal settings to flash the FFb BIOS? Is it worth the trouble to go to the FFb just to get rid of the Smart Command Failure error at boot time? I have my doubts after the last go around - but then it is a hobby right?

Since you are over 400 FSB switch to 2.00D and see if that helps, you will probably need to also use tRD 9 for both channels when using D strap, not always though.

I'd flash again if I were you, and yes always go back to optimized defaults before you flash because if you are not 100% stable it can mess up the flash.

If you need further help with your settings I can help, but get flashed first if you are going to do that, then we'll look over the settings again.

Default Re: Bad install of FFb Bios - Smart Error Fix?

I'm back. I downloaded a second copy of FFb from the Gigabyte Web Site and put it on a new USB stick just to make sure there was no repeat of the corruption I encountered on my first try.

    1. Flashed the BIOS using the BIOS settings below.
    2. When done hit F10 to Power Off.
    3. Tried to reboot and System just looped between Power Down and Gigabyte Splash Screen. Could not get back into the BIOS Setup!
    4. Turned the Power Off and removed one stick of Mushkin Memory.
    5. Rebooted and System let me into the BIOS setup.
    6. Loaded Optimized Defaults and saved BIOS.
    7. Automatic Reboot and set BIOS settings as shown below.
    8. Saved and let it boot into W7 - seemed OK.
    9. Powered down and put 2nd stick of memory back in MB.
    10. Rebooted into W7 - after a few seconds W7 did the BSOD!

This is an exact repeat of the problems I had on the first try!! This machine runs and runs and runs just fine with the FE BIOS so I don't think I have a hardware issue. Any ideas before I punt again?
