Default GA-X58A-UD3R - cannot boot, not even to POST screen

    Dear Gigabyte tech support.
I have been staring gloomily at rows of previously unlit but now brightly lit LEDs wondering what to do, then discovered this forum. I hope you can advise what to try.

I build this PC a week ago with the following spec:
i7 950 3.06GHz with with supplied Intel cooler
Coolermaster Elite 430, plus one fan added to case wall
    Coolermaster GX550
    Leadtek Winfast Geforce GTS250 1GB DDR3
    Kingston PC1333 Triple Channel 3GB
    Western Digital 1TB Black Caviar
    Western Digital 1TB Green something

The build went fine, with no problems, and I have been happily playing GRID, DIRT 2, Just Cause 2 etc all cranked up to the maximum. When I went to bed last night I left the PC running. In the morning my son told me that it was making a funny noise. Later I checked and it seemed fine except that the fans were running full on which i thought odd. (not a lot of cooling in this budget case but i watched the CPU temp and it never rose much above 60 at least when I was looking.)

I didn't look at the screen as it was sleeping., but later in the day i saw that there was no signal to the screen. so i rebooted (the case reset key had stopped working, had to force power off) and got the same result = no signal coming out the display card. Also, the row of LEDs closest to the RAM are lit up(4; green orange green orange, from the bottom) and the six top right as you look at the board (green green orange orange red red from the bottom). Confusingly the manual says these LEDs have multiple functions so nothing to be learnt there. But they're normally off.

I have the default BIOS flashed afresh when built from GIGABYTE website. I haven't touched anything; would know an overclock from an underclock. All stock settings.

I switched the power off, disconnected the cord, pressed the CMOS button (three times for good measure) and rebooted. Same thing. This is my second PC build (admittedly within 3 weeks) and I don't have any troubleshooting experience when the screen doesn't light up. Oh, and there's no casing speaker either so I'm a bit in the dark (apart from the LEDs)

    All suggestions gratefully ....

no change. battery was out for more than 30 mins, power disconnected. when you switch on, all the same LEDs come straight on and stay on. the light on the LAN socket flashes, as if it is working ? the fans change speed occasionally. displays black.

psu is a cooler master GX 550W. Recall my son heard strange noises, could a PSU do that while it is failing? is 550W adequate?

i built another PC a few weeks back with the same PSU but a Radeon 5770 Graphics card (on a P55A-UD3P = much better FPS so far ).

I could try those and try and eliminate something. which one should I swap first ?

ok that fixed it. graphics card swap fixed it. not very impressive a new GPU lasting just one week.

Happy that my motherboard and CPU are not faulty!!

thanks very much for your troubleshooting steps

    cheers
PS was that a good choice for GPU? I was expecting my X58 motherboard with that CPU to be faster than the other build (P55A-UD3P, i5-760, Radeon 5770, 4GB Corsair). Is my memory choice correct?
