    Default GA-890GPA-UD3H/X2 550/Unlock core

    Hi,
    I would like to unlock 1 or 2 cores of my X2 550 with a GA-890GPA-UD3H (rev 2.0).
My bios version is FE and parameters are optimized only.
When I change my bios configuration to :
CPU Unlock= Enable and CPU core control= Auto (4 core at enable)=> W7 hang
Same with VCore at +0.1, W7 have display error and hang.
What can I do to check if it's posible to activate extra core ?
    Thank you

If Windows hangs when you enable 4 cores then it may be that one or more of the disabled cores is damaged in some way. The core(s) could be physically damaged, or the extra cache enabled when they are unlocked could be damaged.

First thing to do would be to try enabling just 3 cores. Hopefully only one of the cores/cache is completely broken. If 3 cores doesn't work either then you most likely have an X2 that was intended to be an X4 but was found to have faults with the last two cores.

The only way you'll get complete stability is if either both locked cores really weren't too badly damaged and can be made stable with extra voltage or if at the time of the chip's production there were a batch of perfect X4's locked down to X2's to meet current market demand.

The most likely X2's that unlock apparently have been ones from Week 21 of manufacture, but I beleive that's week 21 of 2009, so most if not all of those will be gone. Even then there was no guarantee that they'd unlock.

The following thread deals with Stepping numbers (printed on the CPU's IHS) and user's results with unlocking: X2 550 Unlocking & Overclocking Consolidated - XtremeSystems Forums See that although 94 CPU's submitted unlocked to 4 cores, 29 did not and 2 unlocked to X3's. You can also see from the thread that some that unlocked 4 cores were not stable, even below stock speeds or with voltage increases. It's pure luck.
