Default GA-MA74GMT-S2 (rev. 1.4) With WD Caviar Sometimes Wont Boot

    Hi There.

My newly assembled PC sometimes wont boot. I have installed Win7. I have no clear idea which is the defective part. All parts are new (GA-MA74GMT-S2 with WD Caviar Blue 500GB).

Sometimes after changing BIOS settings, and after selecting "SAVE & EXIT", it does not restart, it shuts down. I cannot power up after that. All I have to do is remove the mains power cord for about 15 seconds so I can reboot.

Sometimes if I restart at Windows, it only shuts down, never to reboot as expected.
And sometimes, the SATA HD is not detected in the BIOS, I am not sure if this is related to the problem.

This is a bit strange. The BIOS is latest when I bought it last weekend (F10). Any help please.

Sorry, but that is how my new PC behaves now.

have you plugged it into port0? made sure its running in ide mode in the bios? tried both enabling and disabling native sata port0-3 to see if it helps?

    Hi there,

I have come a similar problem with my own Gigabyte board a GA-790XTA-UD4. It has happened on a couple of occasions and it took me some time to track down the cause of my problem which was with the Graphics Card not staying put in the PCI-e slot. I have a Sapphire 4850X2 and I think the weight & size of it causes it to become slightly unseated. Most of the time there are no problems but, if I have to replace a hard drive or move the internal cabling there is enough movement to create this Shut-down issue and the only way to get the system to restart has been to reseat the card.

Once everything is up and running again, the system is solid until I move the case or replace something.

I plugged it in SATA_0 port.

Honestly, I cannot remember exactly if during the first instance of the problem if I set it to IDE mode. But since I want to make the best out of it, I enabled AHCI AFTER installing Windows 7 (via the famous registry tweak), and also changed IDE to AHCI at the BIOS during the reboot.

Right now, I am observing the problem if it will happen again because it was intermittent.

By the way, will it cause instability to use AHCI?

I have to say that I'm not a fan of AHCI Mode and have had no end of issues with it. Not sure if it is due to my choice of Hard drives, which have been Western Digital or are due to another problem.

I tend to run in Native IDE Mode as I have found this causes a lot less issues but I only have mechanical HDD's and I know that if you are using SSD's then AHCI is the preferable method. Switching to AHCI Mode after install can cause a few problems and, as with most things, it is better if you install the OS in this mode rather than make the change retrospectively.

I remember I installed the AHCI retrospectively on my ACER notebook and has no problem, so I assumed the AHCI mode is okay, but that was Windows XP though. I might as well switch to native IDE mode this time, until the get the issue fixed. I just hope my hardwares are okay. Thanks for the info.

Don't worry, your hardware will be fine. Not sure about the grey hairs though!

I just want to update this thread. The system is now stable with AHCI disabled at eh BIOS. I don't know if there is really a need to enable AHCI, if it really improves the system.
