Hmmm - yes I guess that is a solution - but then I have gone from x8 performance (what I thought in my head), to x4 (whats written on the board), to x1 (Note3 - RAID controller in x1 drops speed) to a final PCI at 132 MBPS - ouffff (makes x1 at 400MBPS look "fast"). I just don't see a happy ending to this one. I've put hours into this build already - to arrive here.... its depressing.

the only other option i can think of is to buy a single ati card and use eyefinity or three monitors but you would lose a monitor that way but gain a pci-e slot

plus you need a display port adaptor to use 3 monitors at an extra cost,if you went with eyefinity

Thanks Wazza for the suggestions. The eyefinity thing looks interesting but non of my monitors have DisplayPort - so I have to mess about with dongle adapters - plus fork out for a new graphics card... Anyway I need 4 monitors - Im used to that now - no turning back - Im not sure how feasable that is with eyefinity (maybe possible but there is still the cost of card + adaptors). I was really counting on having these two cards that I already owned working x8 each which would have been just great. Ive got a spare Asus mobo lying around from 3 years ago that does 2 x x8 on its PCIe x16 slots - really regretting I didnt just get a cheep 775 quad core for that - Id be working on the thing by now. Very depressed by this whole thing - and regretting alot not having looked closely enough at the slot specs before I bought this board (although I doubt very much that I would have picked up the note3 thing with the graphic slot at x1 if one x1 slot used - that really is in the fine print). Im very disappointed. It looks like this is going to come down to forking 50€ for a PCIe x1 HD4350 or similar or changing the mobo. Im not loving either.

Why oh why oh why didnt I go a GA-P55A-UD4 - that looks to run both physical x16 slots at x8 - Id be laughing. I really do feel that this GA-P55A-UD3 board is a disgrace with a physical x16 slot at x4 speed that only does x1. Anyone want to by a cheep GA-P55A-UD3R?

you might be able to get it working, maybe a modified bios could help idk,for that you would need to contact gigabyte and explain what you want to do and they might send you a custom bios

the 5770 flex model supports 3 monitors out of the box,no additional adaptors

    Flex Edition Eyefinity
Sapphire FleX Technology simplifies AMD’s multi-monitor Eyefinity solution by allowing 3 X DVI monitors to be connected to the board ‘out of the box’ WITHOUT the requirement for expensive DisplayPort monitors or Active Adapters. Sapphire FleX Technology also allows for a maximum of four monitors to be connected to the board in SLS (Single Large Surface) mode.

i would email gigabyte first though and see what they say

Ok mailing GB not a bad suggestion (doesn't cost anything..) - I'll do that. I'll post back how I got on.

Let us know what they have to say, in case anyone asks later on.

I'm sure you will update this, but just wanted to bump it up there so in case there is anyone else with similar issues they could see and follow this thread.

Yes, the "lowest spec" of Gigabyte's P55 range to support 8x/8x is the UD4, anything lower is 8x/4x. I understand your frustration, but the UD3 is a fine budget board. It doesn't support multi PCIe card configs very well because it's not designed to. With budget boards, corners have to be cut somewhere to acheive the desired price point.

You should not need to have to buy a 1x PCIe card, a standard card with a full length connector should function fine in a slot restricted to 1x speeds. You can even run things the other way around and use full length cards in shorter slots, as long as those slots are open ended. I've run 16x length PCIe cards in open-ended physical 4x slots.

For 2D and playing HD content PCIE 2.0 @ 500MB/s is plenty. The 1x card you mention is designed for exactly that, as a HTPC GPU. High bandwidth slots are for enabling high resolution 3D more than anything.

I'd still give a couple of older BIOS's a go, and also if any of your PCIe x1 slots are open-ended, try installing the second card in one of those to see if it decides to start working.
